I have seen several commentators say that the issue of democracy did not resonate more because it is "too abstract." A survey we conducted last December offers a different possible explanation: Young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters want to improve our democracy, not just protect it.

Neera on ACA premiums: "Once you’ve conceded this is a problem, then I don’t really understand why the argument is we need to deal with it later and not now."

Our new polling shows that a large majority of voters side with Democrats on the need for action now.

There is no one better than @neeratanden.bsky.social to explain the ins and outs of the shutdown, which she does expertly in her interview with @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social.

So Well Done @schumer.senate.gov !

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

This is not about politics. It's about people.

Let’s break it down:

As more of these stories surface the bigger the backlash there will be to the stubborn refusal of Trump and Republicans to take action now to address the healthcare cost crisis.

at this point you have to acknowledge that there is no way that these guys don't try to mess with the 2026 midterms. there is absolutely no respect for the legitimacy of the opposition

Stephen Miller: "Eventually elections don’t carry the day because violence beats votes… When we see a muscular response from the federal government, it’s because we’re not going to let violence beat votes."

Is he implying federal intervention determines political legitimacy, not ballots or courts?

Confirming today's Washington Post, YouGov finds that Americans are significantly more likely to say Trump (45%) and congressional Republicans (43%) are very responsible for causing the shutdown than to say that about congressional Democrats (36%).

Among the thousands of lies Trump told during the 2024 campaign is that he was unfamiliar with Project 2025.

Trump and Republicans are losing the public on shutdown fight. If you are a reporter writing it differently, you are writing it wrong.

Americans blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown

Americans overwhelmingly side with Democrats on the key issue in the shutdown fight - the cost of healthcare

New Washington Post poll: Americans blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown by 47% to 30%.

They know where the buck stops.

This is a ridiculous and misleading headline for Steve Ratner’s very good op-ed on the Republican war on healthcare and the ACA.

ALSO BREAKING: Republicans voted down a Democratic bill to keep the government open. All 47 Democrats voted for the bill, while all 53 Republicans voted against it and for a shutdown.

1. Trump totally wants a shutdown. If there is one it will be 100% on him.

2. Musk-DOGE already proved Trump thinks he has the power to "get rid of a lot of things," shutdown or no.

3. By "Democratic things" Trump means healthcare, education, environmental protection, and worker rights.

Trump: A lot of good can come down from shutdowns. We can get rid of a lot of things that we didn't want, and they'd be Democrat things

This, plus Trump will be blamed both for a shutdown and raising the cost of healthcare
andycraig.bsky.social
"Dems will get blamed for a shutdown" as opposed to what, all the friendly coverage and positive credit they'd get for caving yet again? This whole premise is built on a delusion about what the alternative is. There's no cowering in the corner and being so inoffensive they won't still attack you.

Trump said it himself, a shutdown is a black mark on his presidency. We can keep the government open and lower your health care costs, but he’s refusing to lead.
