No, Your iPhone Isn't Listening to You. Here's What's Really Happening
There are lots of reasons an ad pops up on your phone, but none involve a microphone listening.

We're a small team and though the work may seem slow compared to apps with larger dev teams, the work hasn't stopped (and alas, much of it is rather unsexy bug fixes and architecture cleanup). As always, please reach out to us to let us know what you'd like to see to improve your Grid experience!

We have a lot still on deck to do in order to make this app the best version of itself. More privacy tools, twilio/phone registration alternatives, degoogled compatible versions, geofences and alerts, and lots more 🙏

The expansion of facial recognition tech by police is deeply worrying, especially as it's happening without proper regulation.

We need legislation that makes its use transparent, unbiased, and respectful of people’s privacy. This tech must not go unchecked.
Government expands police use of live facial recognition vans
The Home Office says the technology helps locate suspects but civil liberties groups warn of heightened surveillance.

The Apple store release with Satellite Maps is coming soon, just took a smidge bit longer with Apple's in-app purchase policy requirements!
August 13, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Hey all! Some may have noticed a new release on Google Playstore that includes Satellite Maps as a new feature! It is a subscription tied feature for us to keep sustaining Grid's development since we are currently self-funded and don't monetize data or do any ads ☺️

Grid update 1.0.3 is live on Apple and Google stores!

We optimized battery consumption, added a ping button to send a quick location update to all your contacts, added support for custom homeservers w/ proxied domains and bug fixes + database upgrades to address lags/crashes that were happening! 🎉

Thanks to invaluable user feedback, we were able to catch and address a restart loop issue triggered by Matrix auto updates that caused Grid to stop working for approx 2 days. We apologize for any confusion caused to users by the app being down and hope you'll give us another try!

Version 1.0.2 is officially live on both the Apple and Google app stores!

We're actively working on rebuilding our website so we can offer direct APK downloads for those that don't utilize either store in the near future. Stay tuned for an updated roadmap!

Each time you see a targeted ad, your personal data has just been exposed to thousands of advertisers & data brokers through a process called "real-time bidding" (RTB).

This lets data brokers harvest & monetize your online activity, which fuels government surveillance. 🧵(1/11)

I know this sounds really unreasonable, but maybe congress could pass a real data privacy law and then it would be safe to use apps even if their owners were maybe a little malicious.

With Grid, you can share your location with those you trust while knowing it's end-to-end encrypted, private, not collected and never sold.

We're currently available on Apple and Google Play Stores.
We're working on enabling direct APK downloads from our website and eventually, the Aurora Store!

We're excited to be on Bluesky and share a little bit about what we're doing!

Grid is an end-to-end encrypted location sharing app built using the Matrix protocol. Designed with privacy in mind, Grid is the response to mainstream location sharing apps selling customer data. #privacy #tech
