My grandma is the nicest, most beautiful person I know. She’s turning 85 this year. I hope she can make it to 90 somehow. She still has her wits about her and we always have an intelligent conversation. If you have someone like this in your life, of any age, be very grateful for them.

I'm sure they would plead that doesn't mean they agree with all the rest, and yet you never see them on the speaker lineup at any kind of left-coded liberal event. And it's not because such events won't have right of center anti-Trump figures. They're generally very eager to, I've done them.

In 2022 I was at Cato, working to launch a journal intended to oppose national conservatism. I quit when my boss told me that I shouldn’t single Trump out for criticism, and I should describe Biden as about equally bad.

They say everyone should quit on principle at least once. That one was mine.

Huge number of cases where the article is basically fine (though maybe buries vital info several paragraphs deep) but the headline is grossly misleading. Unfortunately 100x more people are going to read the headline than finish the article, so “but in paragraph 8 we explain…” is a poor excuse.
I've been a critic of NYT for two decades--sometimes as a job--but I don't have monolithic view. There are great reporters working there. Headline writers, not so much. This is actively misleading. By framing it as a question it takes a side, asserting that he wants to w/out plausible evidence.

I am helping my 16 year old improve something she's written and am seeing the young writer's urge to complicate and to use fancy sounding, but uncertain, words. Be direct. Say what you mean. Which means using words you own, that map to *your* thoughts, and not words unfamiliar and thus imprecise.

This framing by @NewYorkTimes seems irresponsible and lacking in moral clarity. NY Times is introducing symmetry to a debate where there is none. While the video has intensified partisan reactions, it’s still incumbent upon the media to call a spade a spade — in this case, a murder in plain sight.

I got my son a Switch 2 for Christmas, and it turned out he asked my mom for a digital projector, and these gifts have merged, Voltron like, into the kids now playing Mario Cart eight feet wide on the living room wall. Which is very festive.

i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts

I don’t think a high number of pardons is a bad thing at all. There are many, many people who deserve clemency, far more than ever get pardons.

It’s *who* he’s pardoning that is the bad thing.
So far, in less than one year, Donald Trump has issued over TEN TIMES as many pardons as he did in his entire four-year first term. That’s a lot of criminals released onto our streets.
