Important new IARC Evidence Summary Brief published today reminding us that "policies that increase taxes or prices, decrease availability, or restrict marketing of alcoholic beverages are effective in lowering alcohol consumption if they are properly implemented and enforced."

While we welcome the key reference in the Political Declaration for the Global alcohol strategy; the Global Alcohol Action plan; the recommendation for taxation of alcohol; and the mention of the WHO Best Buys, this could have been a much stronger and clearer document for global public health.

Today's Reuters story is no surprise. GAPA has been pushing for stronger language on alcohol policy, conflict of interest and the role of civil society in the Political Declaration from tomorrow's UN #HLM4 on NCDs&MH. All this has been deluted in the final document.
