Stellenanzeige: Die Eidgenössische Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL gehört mit rund 600 Mitarbeitenden zum ETH-Bereich. Im Rahmen von zwei Projekten, eines gefördert von der VELUX-Stiftung zur Biodiversität in lichten Wäldern und eines gefördert vom BAFU/Kantonen zur Biodiversität in Naturwaldreservaten und Wirtschaftswäldern der Schweiz bieten die Forschungseinheiten «Biodiversität und Naturschutzbiologie (Gruppe Lebensraumdynamik)» und «Waldgesundheit und biotische Interaktionen (Gruppe Waldentomologie)» ab April 2026 drei 6-monatige Stellen als Praktikant/-in Waldbiodiversitätsforschung (w/m/d) In den sehr anwendungsorientierten Projekten werden umfangreiche Daten zu Insektenvorkommen in lichten Wäldern bzw. Naturwaldreservaten sowie in Kontrollflächen gesammelt. Hauptaufgaben dieser Praktikumsstellen sind Installation, Leerung und Abbau der Insektenfallen in den Studiengebieten, sortieren von gefangenen Insekten nach grosssystematischen Gruppen sowie die Archivierung der Insektenproben an der WSL. Bei dieser Tätigkeit können Sie die Kenntnisse in der Insektensystematik vertiefen und erhalten Einblicke in weitere Projekte in der Biodiversitätsforschung. Daneben können weitere kleinere Arbeiten in den Projekten anfallen. Sie weisen einen Bachelor- oder Masterabschluss in Biologie oder Umweltwissenschaften auf. Vorkenntnisse zu den wichtigsten einheimischen Insektengruppen sind von Vorteil. Sie sind sich selbständiges Arbeiten gewohnt, sind kommunikativ und speditiv. Sie halten Termine ein, erkennen Probleme frühzeitig und gehen diese bestimmt und kreativ an. Sie arbeiten gerne draussen im Feld, unter verschiedensten Wetterbedingungen. Job offer: PhD in Dendroecology (f/m/d) You will be part of a project aiming to empirically disentangle atmospheric vs. soil drought impacts on intra- and inter-annual wood formation, and mechanistically model drought constraints on intra- and inter-annual tree growth dynamics (https://www.wsl.ch/en/projects/sad-tree) based on a unique monitoring network of 44 forest sites in Switzerland spanning 10 years of soil moisture and atmospheric climate data. In this context, you will contribute to the establishment and analysis of intra- and inter-annual time series of tree growth based on dendrometer, tree rings, and quantitative wood anatomy (QWA). You will be responsible for establishing improved empirical relationships of tree growth-environment interactions based on the long-term integrative Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Continuum dataset (tree & stand traits, physical environment), analyzing: intra-annual water- and growth-related stem radius changes from dendrometer measurements, early-season wood anatomy related to water transport and rehydration, and long-term drought effects on growth using tree-ring widths. You have a Master's degree in forest ecology, environmental sciences, or equivalent. You should have excellent analytical and statistical skills in time-series analysis, preferably in dendrosciences and/or tree physiology. Ideally, you are proficient in programming and handling of large datasets, and have experience with tree-ring methods. You are able to efficiently expand and acquire knowledge in topics relevant to the project. You have a proficient command of written and spoken English, are able to work in a structured, efficient and independent manner, and have a high level of team spirit and have good communication skills.

Innovative adaptive practices in mountain communities often emerge from local resource constraints and community needs, as highlighted by Zhou and He in their contribution to this issue. In Guangming village, Yunnan, China, farmer cooperatives have succeeded in enhancing creation of value added in the local walnut trade by establishing processing facilities, such as this drying facility, in the village. The photo by Weijia Zhou shows a man shoveling walnuts in the drying room. The nuts lie in heaps on an aerated wire mesh floor resting on evenly spaced-out wooden beams; some nuts are packed in mesh bags. The room has light gray walls and a ceiling made of wooden beams.
