Wolves return: How to keep livestock safe?

How can farmers protect their livestock? And how do they feel about measures such as electric fences or guard dogs? Researchers carried out a survey to find out: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

A lone wolf stands in the shadows (left of photograph) by the side of a small road in the countryside. There is farmland just next to the road and the wolf is standing at the edge of an enclosure for horses in a village in Poland. With thanks for the photo to Jacek Wójcik

Strips of land planted with flowers are much loved: they are beautiful and attract bees and insects. Is that enough for #Biodiversity? Researchers call for more diversity and collaboration across the landscape: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

Photograph shows villages and rolling fields and blue sky far away in the distance. Most of the photograph is taken up by a wide, green, lush field in the foreground. In the middle is a broad strip of large, white daisy-like flowers (ox-eye daisies or Leucanthemum vulgare). Thanks to Bea Maas for the photograph.

What secrets about the early Earth are buried in the jaws of a dinosaur?

A research team analysed isotopes in the enamel of their fossilized teeth to investigate the climate and photosynthesis during the age of the dinosaurs: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

#PNAS: doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
Tooth of a Europasaurus, a dinosaur similar to Diplodocus, in limestone, found in the Langenberg quarry in the Harz Mountains which was also analysed in the study. The tooth is dark grey/brown and about the size of a section of a finger (fingers are also visible top and bottom of image holding the light grey rock). With many thanks to Thomas Tütken for the image. Photo showing large, shiny, black tooth of a Tyrannosaurus rex – like the teeth analysed in this study – found in Alberta, Canada. The shape and size is similar to the horn of an animal - coming to a point. It is longer than the human hand that is holding it, which gives an idea of its size. With many thanks to Thomas Tütken for the image.

Cosmic dust holds clues to Earth’s ancient atmosphere

Tiny particles of rock have been raining down on our planet since time immemorial. Researchers find fossilized micrometeorites can reconstruct the atmosphere of the past: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

Research: doi.org/10.1038/s432...
Photo shows grey powdery rock and stones together with chunks of rock in the chalk marl pit in Hannover. Researchers collected around 100 kilograms of sedimentary rock and searched for fossilized micrometeorites. They found an average of one micrometeorite per kilogram of rock. There are also tools - such as a pick and lab noebook and other tool. Image thanks to researcher Fabian Zahnow

What happens when a theologian, a physicist and a biologist walk into a bar?

You’d have to come to a postdoc social to find out! Postdoc Walk&Talk social tomor (Fri 25 July) & #SciComm Club next Wed (30 July). Postdoc events: goettingen-campus.de/postdoc-event #Interdisciplinary #StrongerTogether
Researchers from across the Göttingen Campus attend a postdoc social meet-up. There are researchers from a range of disciplines - around 20 shown here - relaxing after a day's work in the lab or library or office. They sit outside at wooden benches.

We know when the wild birds sing

Researchers used automatic audio recorders and AI to collect and identify detailed data about birdsong in European Forests. It turned out it was more than just larks and owls: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

#JournalOfOrnithology: doi.org/10.1007/s103...
Small audio recording devices were used to record bird songs in the forest around the clock. The photograph shows a lush, green forest and the view is up into very tall trees, looking up to the sky behind the canopies. There are no birds to be seen but there is a small, rectangular, dark-green device strapped round a tree trunk. Image thanks to David Singer who led this research. A tiny, grey-brown bird with wide open beak perching at the top of a stump of wood with blurred yellow/green (likely) tree foliage in the background. The bird looks like it is singing at the top of its voice. Image of wren thanks to Kev (TheOtherKev) who made this image freely available via Pixabay
