It doesn’t help that neither of us are into romcoms or ‘heartwarming’ type movies, so I guess we’re mostly looking at comedies

She’s never seen Elf, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, or Nightmare Before Christmas, but those are all rewatches for me

Oh, and the newest Wednesday album, who I’d first heard of a few years ago when listening through NPR’s year-end list, which if nothing else has the great line “We watched a Phish concert and Human Centipede /Two things I now wish I had never seen” and is where I recognized MJ Lenderman from last yr

So today ended up being a really great day to check out a few new jazz albums; lots of variety from traditional piano trio from Sullivan Fortner, to some really out-there stuff on Trio of Bloom, and some great sounds from Patricia Brennan (which has the bonus of it being fun to say ‘marimbist’)

Also: holy shit, the guitar tones on this album! Like just the right amount of warmth and overdrive on some parts to occasionally trick you into thinking there’s a saxophone somewhere in there if your mind wanders and you’re not paying attention

Ayyyy that’s it!

Looks like I can at least listen to the first two tracks for free, but afterward gotta decide if I enjoy them enough to buy the full album

…and there’s always at least one (usually orchestral, or in this case jazz) album that’s obscure enough that it isn’t on YT Music

Having a tough time finding an upload to YT too, so if anyone knows where I can stream Thereupon by Fieldwork, I’d be quite grateful. Otherwise, moving on to the next

Onto the third part of the list and starting the morning with some avant-garde jazz via Mary Halvorson’s About Ghosts

Which is probably why I got so excited; seeing the same seeds in someone else’s thoughts!

sort of a static entity. It’s when it’s still in the creative process that it can take any direction, become something unexpected*, and that’s the most exciting thing about art to me

*holy shit, did I just figure out why I love improvised music as much as I do? lol

one on my Intragram stories, but by the time I’ve finished recording a song I’ll usually listen to it to make sure I like how it turned out, then try and move on to the next spark

I may come back a few months later and listen to it some - I mean I made it because I like it - but at that point it’s

may be worthy of existing in the world and that it would be something that I enjoy

But the time I feel most connected to a song I’ve made is when I’m still in the writing/recording process

When all of that’s finished, I’m more or less done with the song by that point. I’ll share a link here, post
