I will always take a well thought out and charming map over just a JPEG of the overworld, to be sure. I think there’s an ideal middle ground between the remake and the original.
And I am DEFINITELY gonna hand draw a map next time I play it on GBC! I’m mad at myself for not thinking of that sooner!

It’s not a fatal flaw by any means, since LA was my second fav Zelda for a LONG time.
I just don’t remember details like that well enough, so it’s the one thing in LA that frustrated me. Especially after putting the game down half finished for a like a week? Brain’s empty by then 😅

King’s Field 2 (outside of Japan) has a much more artistic map, and just the one, but I still started a hand drawn map, which perfectly shows where I was when I played the game last. Helpful.
And then there’s Wizardry Gaiden, which is a totally different style of labyrinth.
King’s Field 2 isn’t isolated to one Metroid Prime Island like its predecessor, and instead had a map that’s divided into four slices. I actually took a picture of my TV screen for this. The last one I played, I was in the Training Ground and Baracks, which need its own more detailed map, actually. Oh, and here’s the missing page of the previous King’s Field’s map. The Big Mine is one of the areas I didn’t map. I mapped the mine kart tracks over the bottomless pit, but you can see the two landing points for that where it goes into the mine proper, and I didn’t draw that. King’s Field is definitely a direct descendant of Wizardry, and the ancestor of both Metroid Prime and Dark Souls. But you’d be forgiven for missing that looking at the map. I adore Oldschool, multi-floor dungeons/towers like this, and I mapped out the entirety of Wizardry Gaiden. I actually used online maps as reference more, mostly because there is only ONE complete online map for Wizardry Gaiden (that I could find) and that one is trapped in the Wayback Machine to boot. I’m SO sad that I my save file got deleted before I got to complete the shop and get a password for the next game…

I put WAY more dissection into the Alt Text, but TLDR, I love all kinds of maps in game, so long as they are deliberately made to complement the type of game world and play experience the Dev is designing, even if that means the optimal strategy is to draw your own map on paper.
King’s Field has static maps in game that only show the area you are in, and only from the perspective/to the detail that mattered to the person who made them, in universe. FANTASTIC flavor, though it sadly forces you to switch between multiple map items in your inventory and never gives you a “perfect” map of the Island… So I made my own, detailed, four page map, only leaving out a few areas that were mostly straightforward and also hostile to stand around in due to poison or ants. I did this with a combination of checking in game maps, actually walking around in the 3D space, and only checking online to keep myself from going off the page and cleaning up after. Involved a LOT of erasing before I put any ink on paper. I didn’t see any maps online that gave flavor to your actual surroundings and landmarks, like the freaking ocean forming a small bay on the east side of the island. Looking at the in-game or online maps, you’d assume that negative space was walls and not water, which is the kind of assumption that can get you lost. The only parts I didn’t map was one of the mines and the final Area where Guyra lives. And I think a poison swamp cave…They were all more straightforward areas that you could really just keep your left hand on the wall for, and all three wanted to kill you for standing around. So much poison. So many ants. I freaking love King’s Field SO MUCH.

I love Link’s Awakening, but it’s pitiful in-game map was not up to the task of navigating Koholint.
The overworld is twisty and filled with roadblocks, and it could be very frustrating to travel.
The remake honestly fixed that issue just by having a more detailed map and being a bit less cramped.
I think this overworld is great. Winding and well pact to give you as much world to travel as possible in the limited space. The remake just spread it out a little to feel less cramped, and I like that a lot. Minimal downsides. Back on GameBoy and GBC, this map is cute, but functionally useless, since it can’t show you any of the roadblocks on the actual overworld. You cannot travel in a straight line from the village to the river, for example, because you have to wind through gorges and forests and around holes in the ground and other item-based roadblocks meant to gate your access to later parts of the game. System limitations hurt the functionality badly enough, that I wish it just didn’t have a grid and was more there for decoration and basic layout. This is a MUCH more useful map. It’s sadly no longer cute, but you can actually plot a coarse from point A to point B with the in game map. For some games, this might be too much information, but Koholint is designed like a maze. That’s good world design, but gets frustrating to navigate by memory, especially when you have a bad memory like me. And I know, cause that kind of how you HAVE to play it on GBC, unless you Google a world map and save it on your phone, which id rather not do. If your game world is complex and detailed, giving a player a detailed and interactive map that they can gradually fill out and complete is a fantastic boon! Some players won’t need it, but the ones that do will LOVE you, and I will love you just because I can’t get enough of good maps! Meanwhile, if your game world is not so complex, more open and “just go north” like an Oldschool JRP Overworld, I always salivate over the games that include stylish, more abstract and general maps, like and old timey sea chart. I personally plan to make an RPG set on a small, open island like that, and have the map basically be a PNG of an old map of the island, with no marker for the player’s location. It’s a small and simple enough island that it would be easy to just use landmarks to know where you are, and towns marked on the map that don’t appear to exist in game might serve as a subtle hint to secret locations. But Link’s Awakening, it’s Overworld, Kohilint, is really its first and biggest dungeon! So you need a better map. Maybe next time I replay the original, I’ll actually draw a map myself, like I did for King’s Field and Wizardry Gaiden.

People respond to cute animals in trouble, right? Here is one of the clam shrimp from the November generation, which are now all dead except this cup because of ongoing drought in Florida. It's possible they are genetically distinct from the other seasonal groups, so I saved them to collect eggs.
