When in doubt, look at Mignola's work.
Often the pages have perfect dynamics; they open in the first panel, come closest to the reader/intensify in the middle, and close-out in the last panel.
He controls the page, it doesn't control him.

If you don't 'get' Mike, there's nothing I can say to help.

i'm doing another pass on the control scheme right now. i've been intensely iterating on this for the entire project, which is good for what i'm trying to design: a full complexity roguelike with four buttons.

this sounds impossible, but check out this plan. it's very sound.
a text mode ruin, with several rooms, some foliage, an oversized backpack, and a shield.

this guy from Sonic CD is named bata-pyon. "Batta" is grasshopper/locust, "batabata" is onomatopoeia for rushing, and "pyonpyon" is onomatopoeia for jumping, so the word alone is like a pun tesseract. very beautiful & very powerful
bata-pyon is a mostly green robot based on a grasshopper with very large eyes and a red and grey spring instead of legs

I’ve been playing a bunch of Rare games, which got me thinking about my “for fun” animal platforming duo.
I’m not actually very good at making up big bad villains, but I thought of a cool guy after dreaming about kart racers.
I think he’d be a great final boss for a 3D Platformer or Kart Racer.
They push the power dynamic of Banjo and Kazooie in the other direction. Nickel is a powerhouse who worries more about overheating than actually taking damage, while Dime serves as both a lock-on and tip buddy, like Navi, as well as doing all the puzzle solving and lock picking. I really like the idea of Dime actually climbing into a giant padlock like it’s a birdhouse, and the lock-picking would be done via box pushing puzzles. Meanwhile, Nickel has a pitiful jump, but he is fast on his feet, faster in the water, and he climbs REALLY well, just like real alligators. He’s also a BRUISER in a fight, in spite of his laid back personality, cause he’s a dang alligator. They live in an old van that is constantly breaking down, “nickel & dimeing them to death,” so that they have to go on adventures to collect cash and replace the parts that break. Wholesome buddies, though Dime being a Wren means that they are very aggressive and especially territorial. Don’t mess with Dime’s stuff. I woke up one morning with that quote in my mind and was quickly reminded that tires are hard to draw. Rare games had a lot of “objects with eyes” as characters, enemies, and bosses, but I don’t think any really elevated themselves beyond minor boss status. I love the idea of this guy, just a massive, hateful tire who wants to turn everything he sees into dirt tracks and concrete roads that he can burn up and ruin as the fastest and baddest thing on the road! Definitely not a villain who’d team up with other villains either, since their ideas and goals aren’t likely to be road related. So he’d be good for heroes and other villains to team up against. Being made of rubber also would excuse a lot of alternate designs and boss fights. He’s huge by default, but could gain or lose air as an excuse to make him smaller or even bigger. His simplest move set would be like a Wheelie from Kirby, rolling chasing, and drifting, but he could even flop over to try and crush you, slide around on ice like a spinning puck, bounce around and maybe even swing. On top of that, team him up with three more tires, personality coded like Pac-Man ghosts, and they could run an actual car, stack up into a tower for boss fights, and even take on other shapes with smaller tires form tire beasts and things like that. Fire and ice are thematic for tires too, so he’s got a lot of flexibility(lol). And teeth. Sharp, hungry teeth. He’s not necessarily Nickel & Dime’s villain, but I think he’d be great for both a 3D Platformer main villain and obviously for a Kart Racer as well. Tires are deceptively hard to draw.
