"The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political & cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" —Isaac Asimov
idk ... just a gen-er here ... but maybe people's reliance on social media instead of real life friendships is part of the problem? bsky.app/profile/jonw...

Update. Racism is the Republican platform. Almost no Republican elected has denounced. The exception proves the rule. Around three republican electives in Congress have expressed objections to this. Two of them are giving the White House the benefit of the doubt saying it might have been a mistake

thank you @votevets.org for this post. it's scary how emotional it made me (slightly teary as i type). bsky.app/profile/vote...
Non-masked MN National Guard are out handing out hot chocolate, coffee and donuts to protesters. One simple act has de-escalated the situation and helped gain the trust of people. See the difference between professional soldiers and the pretend tough guys in CBP and ICE?
January 25, 2026 at 10:49 PM
@raskin.house.gov at tomorrow's hearing, please ask the following questions: how many current ICE & CBP agents are Proud Boys, 3%-ers or 1/6-ers? & why are the agents who killed yesterday on the streets today in violation of all law enforcement standards?
bsky.app/profile/verm...
Curious why ICE and CBP agents are so brutal? Here's a useful explainer I wrote last week, before Saturday's outrageous murder, about how uniquely unsuited ICE and CBP are for this moment—and why they were so corruptible into Trump's own fascist secret police: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/ice-101-ho...
"ICE 101" — How Trump changed ICE and CBP into a fascist secret police
ICE and CBP are fatally flawed products of the post-9/11 War on Terror — now Trump has weaponized those very flaws to occupy America.

the question that i am waiting to be answered is this: how many ICE and CBP agents are either proud boys, 3%-ers, or participated in 1/6?

Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.

For the most part your statement is true, but reports are that the ICE agent that shot the Minneapolis man today was an 8-year ICE (border patrol) veteran … it’s not the training, it’s the organization as a whole — it needs to be abolished

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

i'm just saying your management stance on AI with respect to the guild is a slippery slope.
December 18, 2025 at 8:06 PM
it's sarcasm for the future of respected journalism. along with registering my frustration with the "AI revolution". nobody asked for this and yet it's ridiculousness keeps intruding upon our lives. (also, wasn't a paper caught earlier this year attaching a real byline to an AI-generated story?)
December 18, 2025 at 7:20 PM
was this indeed written by the great journalists at ProPublica or by AI? for an organization that i support this is really disheartening ... at the very least articles written by AI should be labeled as such
bsky.app/profile/prop...
1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

a line needs to be added to every bill passed; every constitutional amendment that, "this too applies to republican presidents—even if their name is Trump" bsky.app/profile/thed...
Donald Trump will go down in history as the first American president to have willingly betrayed his own country in service to a foreign enemy. His acts of treason will be taught in history books for generations to come, and the name 'Trump' will become synonymous with treachery.

what is national guardsmen doing in syria in the first place?

IDK ... maybe use this time to talk about how we are seemingly engaged in a war with venezuela without congressional approval? maybe then speaker johnson could not then say he has no idea what reporters are asking him about bsky.app/profile/meid...

i'm sorry, but didn't they present this to the UN to ratify? (that, oddly, russia and china abstained from voting) if it isn't the US plan, who presented? or am i thinking of something else?

Rounds: Senator Shaheen mentioned that Secretary Rubio did make a phone call to us this afternoon. I think he made it very clear that we are the recipients of a proposal that was delivered to one of our representatives. It is not our recommendation. It is not our peace plan.

just stop, please. i admire AOC & her comms chops, but POTUS is not an on-the-job-training position. This country is OBSESSED with youth candidates, but we will need a seasoned person to govern us when the trump misery is over. institutional rebuilding—both to agencies & to foreign relations.
She doesn’t even legislate. Which, hey!, isn’t that the actual JOB?

there's a handful of books about kids solving mysteries around the UofC area of Chicago written by Blue Balliett: Chasing Veermer, The Wright 3 and The Calder Game. They're really wonderful and the use of Chicago as a backdrop to many of their adventures is a delight.

All right, people. I need some book recommendations for my kid. He's been ploughing through the Wimpy Kid series and he's never been happier or better behaved. But we are more than halfway through already after only two weeks. Are there any similar book series he might love the same way?
November 14, 2025 at 8:29 PM
also ... do you think there is any way that, even if a vote happens in the senate (lucy-football) that the house would bring it to the floor? they will not ... they won't even bring the house into session because of the epstein files .... DO NOT BE SO NAIVE!!!!!!!!
bsky.app/profile/kain...
My statement on the funding deal to reopen government, protect federal employees, and vote to protect health care:
November 10, 2025 at 12:55 AM
no, the reason why it's dragging on is the epstein files! if the senate passed a compromise (thank you for offering one yesterday) the house would come into session & johnson would have to swear in grijalva. i bet they're going to be out until TN-07 is finalized in december.
bsky.app/profile/schu...
The only reason Republicans have dragged this shutdown on for so long is simply because Republicans don’t want to lower healthcare costs.

They are happy to let 24 million Americans see their premiums DOUBLE on average.

this might not be a bad strategy ... she can always change we party affiliation post election — as Rs have been seen to do

bsky.app/profile/wash...
Kate Barr, a lifelong Democrat, changed her party registration to run in the GOP primary against North Carolina incumbent Rep. Tim Moore.

She says it’s the only way to compete for a gerrymandered seat whose boundaries were drawn to heavily favor Republicans.
This North Carolina Democrat can’t win her district. So she’s running as a Republican.
In her crusade against gerrymandering, Kate Barr is challenging her Republican congressman in the GOP primary to make a point.
