my therapist recommended the book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski

after experiencing stress, YOU MUST DO SOMETHING to tell your body that it is safe, otherwise you’re still soaked in stress juice

partial table from The Burnout Workbook How to Complete the Cycle There are lots of ways. Not all of them will work for you, and none of them work for everyone. You probably already know some of the things that work for you, and you’ll recognize them below. (table column headings) Cycle-Completing Activity Defined As Example Most Effective When Moving your body Physical activity is the single most efficient strategy for completing the stress response cycle. Any movement at all can help remind your body that it can move you from danger to safety. If it's effective for you, get your body moving enough to breathe deeply for 20 to 60 minutes a day, most days of the week. Sweat it out by running, swimming, biking, or dancing to Beyonce in your kitchen. You have access to it, and you need to remind your brain that your body Is a safe place to live. Sleeping Your brain practices and completes experiences from the past, helping you process stress among all the other good things sleep does for us). Probably 7 to 9 hours-in one continuous lump or in multiple chunks, during the part of the day when your body asks for it, depending on whether you're an early bird or a night owl. You are living in a humon body. If you change only one thing in your life after using this workbook, let it be getting adequate sleep. Breathing Deep breathing so that your belly expands and contracts. Breathe in slowly to a count of 5, hold that breath for a count of 5, slowly exhale for a count of 10, and pause for a count of 5. Repeat 5 times. Your stress isn't that high, or when you just need to siphon off the very worst of the stress so you can get through a difficult situation, after which you'll do something more hardcore. Engaging in positive social interaction Casual but friendly interactions with another person. Have a polite conversation with your seatmate or say "Nice day" to the barista when you buy your coffee. Your brain needs a reminder that the world is a safe place. (page 2 of the table) Showing affection Deeper connection with a loving presence who likes, respects, and trusts you, and whom you like, respect, and trust. Specifically, an action-a long kiss or hug-that tells your body that you are safe with your community. Kiss your partner for 6 seconds. Hug someone you love and trust for 20 full seconds, while both of you are supporting your own weight. Pet a cat or play with a dog. You are looking for an immediate shift from a state of anxiety to a state of safety. Laughing Loud, silly, abdomen-aching, helpless laughter. Belly laugh with another person-or even reminisce about times you've laughed together. You want to relieve stress in the easiest, most fun way possible. Having a big ol' cry Crying may not change the situation that caused your stress, but it helps you complete the cycle. The crying may just happen on its own, or you can access it by watching your favorite tear-jerker movie. You are looking to move from feelings of overwhelm and stuckness into a state of release and relief. Expressing yourself creatively Making a thing just for the pleasure of making it can move difficult feelings from inside your body out to a safe place-into a song, poem, mural, sculpture, scarf, meal, etc. Sing, dance, write, recite, build, carve, cook, knit, paint, draw, etc. You have the opportunity to dedicate time and resources to making things. Engaging your imagination Whether you imagine a thing, or it's actually happening in the world, your brain acts very similarly. This means that you can move your body through a stress cycle using your imagination alone. Read a book, watch a movie, or play a game with the kind of heroic ending that makes you want to cheer and tell people about it! (Just staring at comfort TV is numbing rather than cycle completing.) You get carried away by stories. Also convenient if you are limited in engaging in other cycle-completing activities (i.e., you're on a train or you have really low energy).

I volunteered for a bunch of the logistics this year and it was a big project that went pretty good. somehow 15lbs cooked in ~2 hrs. convection went crazy on that bird. made soup today after gifts. took a couple hours of being home before I felt like, oh, we did it. these are the last of the dishes

I’ve been thinking a lot about social software accommodating human impulse. like if there was a “CLICK HERE TO MAKE A LOUD BAD DECISION” button then maybe I would be less of a Posting Risk? lol anyway psyched to dig in on this problem space again
