Absolutely magisterial interview with John Bew by @samfr.bsky.social and @ldfreedman.bsky.social. In a highly competitive field the most interesting thing I've read on Comment is Freed, on everything from the style of four administrations to our foreign policy challenges:

COMMENTARY: What Donald Trump is betting on is becoming the world’s largest and last petrostate. China is betting on becoming its largest and lasting electrostate.

Which side would you rather be on?

Claim: Trump claims the Ontario government ad showing Ronald Reagan strongly opposing tariffs was "FAKE".

Fact check: ❌ FALSE. The Ontario ad was 100% accurate. Every word of the Ontario ad can be found in Reagan's radio address on "Free and Fair Trade".

Astonishing advance by the Greens, astonishing implosion of Labour. When will Starmer's government get the message that it is destroying its base with deeply unpopular, rightwing policies?

By chasing Reform, it legitimises the far right while delegitimising itself.
Latest poll puts Greens just two points behind Labour. When I said we weren't here to be disappointed in Labour but to replace them, I meant it.

Join us and let's make hope normal again.

The bullet train in 🇯🇵-as glorious as everyone says. A reminder the Japanese built their first high speed train for the 1964 Olympics and it became national by the 80s. They’re now building Maglevs (floating trains).

Meanwhile in 🇬🇧 we can’t be sure we’ll connect HS2 to Euston. Pathetic.

Donald Trump is the only person who can lean on Israel to stop starving people to death in Gaza. Keir Starmer could convince Trump to do that. They're meeting on Monday, so we don't have long to get the PM to act. Add your name to the open letter now: 38d.gs/07es

Words are not enough - current actions are not enough - where is our humanity?

Israel’s barbaric killing of civilians and repeated breaches of international law must stop.

Tell me the words that will make you act and I will say them. My plea to my government👇🏾

For a while there was too little coverage of the starvation in Gaza and the shootings at aid sites, but what strikes me now is how much coverage (relatively speaking) there is in print and even TV, and yet Israel keeps ratcheting up in plain view.

Freeports and SEZs make this a much easier process, why? Because secondary legislation is embedded in all 86 UK free zones, which means zero parliamentary or public scrutiny.

People aren’t seeing the benefit of renewables because electricity prices are still tied to gas. That means higher bills for everyone, even though more of our power comes from cheaper renewables.

We must break that link to cut energy bills for everyone.

@commonsspeaker.parliament.uk who can censor MPs?
Parliament and Hansard have removed “We are all Palestine Action” from my speech on Wednesday 2 July 2025 — despite me saying it.

This is a blatant attempt to censor me and rewrite the record.

This is not how a democracy behaves.

We will not be silenced.
