4/ We’ve expanded to cover the entire state over the past six years, added a SoCal bureau and hired a host of talented journalists based in Calif. news deserts hurting for more good journalism (plus had ZERO LAYOFFS during that entire span).

3/ That kind of thoughtful expansion is at the core of what we’re trying to do here. Since separating from
the @sfchronicle.com in 2019, SFGATE has become the largest news site on the entire West Coast, passing the LA Times in July 2024 despite having 1/5th the number of journalists on staff.

2/ They'll not only tackle ambitious journalism about the parks, but they'll actually be based in the communities most tied to the ones they cover — we're not going to hire a CA journalist to cover Zion National Park.
