My mom has the same problem! I tried to talk her into rigging some sort of boom from the roof but so far she doesn’t seem convinced. 🤷‍♀️

I would like to clarify that the 🩷 is for the lovely tree & not for the necessity of shoveling.

I’m excited to pick them up! (It’s weirdly fun going to get them.) however the time is approaching and nothing has been done in terms of prep… 😂😬

Today he sent me a link to (he said) a good option, that would cost in the end $200-something a year. I shouldn’t spend that kind of money on it, but I’m thinking about it. Meanwhile 2 questions come to mind…

1. Why am I like this? 😂 and
2. Why am I being enabled? 😂

…after all that, I hope it really does turn out to be the native flowering dogwood (Benthamidia florida, formerly Cornus florida, and not a kousa (B. japonica)!

I sympathize with the need for this project! I didn’t stick with my bloom time chart last year but I did it long enough to note a gap in late spring/early summer. Of course my strategy is just to try to cram more plants in. 😂 Hoping some of what I ordered will fill that gap.

Thanks! I just hope I can do them all justice!
December 30, 2025 at 3:49 PM
Oh! You reminded me I have S. nemoralis as well - it’s in the front & somehow I forgot the front yard existed. 😂 I love it, especially in winter!

(And I love these guys [Scolia dubia, blue winged wasps] who love it too!)

Also bought some white goldenrod (S. bicolor) last year & never got it in the ground, so hopefully it survives 😬 but also hopefully seeds work out better.

🎉 I have some stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida) already and LOVE IT, the leaves are so soft for something called “stiff,” if I were in charge of naming I would have named it puppy’s-ears goldenrod or something. Also loads of tall/Canada goldenrod (S. canadensis) which as you know cannot be tamed. 😂

I reliably do things like this to myself & end up overwhelmed. 😂🤷‍♀️ But also we’re about 5 years in and after a few years of getting derailed/redirected by one neighbor’s complaints & never getting to finish projects I decided last year to just get it DONE & tweak from there as needed!

It DOES! 😂

We have a transplanted sycamore too! (Though sometimes it makes me worry it might be a London plane.) Also loads of redbuds popping up that I’m mostly letting have their way. And a giant silver maple in front whose decline we are managing, with the intent of leaving a snag eventually. Twins, sorta!

And lastly:

Zizia aurea (Golden-Alexanders)

For my reference I starred the ones I already have but wanted more of, or used to have, or tried to have (but missed starring a few).

I should do a similar list of the trees we’re getting from Forestry.
