Yep! My own shorthand explanation is normally something like: it’s real, it’s conservative but it doesn’t call the shots in Japanese politics in any meaningful way

There's a more nuanced version of that argument that I've made before, which goes something like, NK is a pressure group for conservatism, being associated with it is useful as a lowest common denominator signal particularly for a politician like Kishida.

Nippon Kaigi discourse is dumb but somehow so is Gearoid’s counterpoint that “your honor, it can’t be a sinister far-right movement - it has too many people in it!”

Yeah I think any standard radio show (or print news) will get you to like 90%+ of all the news you need for the day. And getting the final 10% is probably not worth the cost of being insanely online

I haven’t done exactly this, but every morning I listen to 30 minutes of really dry Brazilian radio news (Panorama CBN) and it’s pretty rare that anything I read online throughout the day improves on that.

A thought I keep having: what if I just log off all social media and subscribe to a few paper magazines and newspapers instead

I just scrolled by this on the homepage and lamented the debasing of the NYT headline. Pitchbot would have had something like “Amid fiery rhetoric, Hegseth speech offers insights”

I’m in kpop fandom on twitter and I’ve come to the same conclusion from the opposite direction. I think there is some serious scholarship to be done on how fandom and MAGA’s modes of action often intersect or mirror each other, starting with this semi-religious view that your side is always right.

There’s an essay to be written about how maga patriotism is just shitty fandom. Anyone who follows sports knows fans like this, it’s always the ref’s fault, the other team doesn’t exist, there’s some plot/player/coach holding the team back otherwise they’d always win easy bsky.app/profile/atru...

Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

Jorge Luís Borges vs. 30 programas de debate, cada um dos quais contém 30 programas de debate, e assim sucessivamente, compondo um programa de debate infinito que contém todas as posições, verdadeiras e falsas, todas refutadas por ele.

The real tragedy of Jon Stewart is that he correctly identified and critiqued this style of discourse VERY early on - and then contributed to hypercharging a media ecosystem that is essentially a big Crossfire
