I'm sorry you had to go through that. :(

Ok, maybe that was one too many litters of kittens.

Yeah, websites got replaced by platforms... My original distro's website/catalogue was all coded by hand too. I have long retired it, and when I come back, even though I'm a fullstack web developer, I'm probably going to use a platform first to get going...

"Can I still use my old account after I migrate?

Sorry, no. After you migrate, your old account will generally be either disabled or fully managed by Bridgy Fed. You won't be able to log into it and use it directly yourself. "

Why does it work that way? It seems like an obstacle to adoption...

This is so awful. Star Fruit Books was such an exciting project, I have a small collection of their published works. Matt was such a great guy. Rest in peace.

I met a "retired" zinester at a Palestine action recently (they hadn't made a zine in 30+ years) and they were so thrilled to learn that people were still into zines that they made a phenomenal old school Israel/Palestine collage zine for my distro in about a week :)

And of course there were great comics as well, so it's not like we were not going to have some. But there's more than I'd like. 8)

The internet has given many writers an easier medium to spread their work... I was recently on a panel that reviewed 210 applications for 60 tables at a fair, and even though we explicitly had a "text-first" mandate, there was not enough decent applicants to make it a text-only fair.

(from The Secret Rules of the Terminal, out now! wizardzines.com/zines/termin...)
your TTY driver has configuration

you can see how it’s configured by running:

stty -a

for example it print out the current window size!
Ctrl+S

by default, pressing Ctrl+S wi(( freeze your terminal (and Ctrl+Q wi(( unfreeze) I have never wanted this in my life, you can turn it off with stty -ixon (fish turns it off by default)

###fun fact: changing Ctrl+C technically you can use stty to set a different keyboard shortcut for Ctrl+C, (ike “u”

stty intr u

this is extremely chaotic and I can’t imagine a reason that I would ever do this though
programs have to configure the TTY driver to get friendly features

developer: I want arrow keys to work in my program!

other person: better tell the TTY driver to turn off canonical mode! (more on the next page)
the TTY driver’s settings are called “termios settings”

for the gnarly details:

man termios

but if you’re writing a terminal program libraries like readline or ncurses will handle setting up the TTY driver
panel 6

smiling stick figure with short curly hair: I’ve only needed to use stty once in the last 20 years and I mostly don’t understand its output but I think it’s a fun view into terminal internals!

Reading this in conjunction with Liz Pelly's Mood Machine and Will Tavlin's Casual Viewing n+1 article, gives a broader view of how pervasive cultural rot has become... Support indie artists, small press, booksellers, critics, zine fairs <3

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

When you sit down to read a paper book, either put your phone in airplane mode, or plug your phone in across the room so you’re not tempted to reach for it

This is good advice:

« A big part of reading is visiting other worlds, and you can’t visit another world if you’re constantly distracted by this one.

If you’re going to read on your phone or e-reader, switch it to airplane mode so you’re not even tempted to go online

My Amphibian Man is done! Just gotta wait a little longer for him to dry completely before I put him back in the hoop. My favorite part is the soak. Somehow, embroidery looks so good in cloudy water #theshapeofwater @realgdt.bsky.social
Completed embroidery of the Amphibian Man from The Shape of Water. He is still in his hoop with the stabilizer attached Embroidery removed from hoop and soaking in soapy water. The water looks foggy and murky, obscuring the darker details of the embroidery
Embroidery laid flat and drying outside of the hoop

Folding up these little zines to hand out in my neighborhood. Thanks @meganpiont.bsky.social for making these. ICE has been kidnapping my neighbors in North Portland.
