Even though attendance is high in many of our schools, we're having a real focus on this. APs have provided key learning where often pupils have been out for significant time, but also come from different curriculum pathways

Supporting pupils when they come back to make the experience better for them is precisely what is happening here. Large numbers of pupils do in fact find school a place they enjoy coming to. I think adults often fall into projection traps which can influence how children feel though.

I often have visited schools where leaders express surprise when we don't see something they believe is systemic. They ask staff later who say they always do x. Closer tracking and awareness can be surprising. I always think of the observations looking at who answers questions. Fascinating stuff

In our English curriculum, other than the bedrock of teaching only Literature which is important and we believe will endure, we have two requirements for the texts we choose and the questions we ask. We must empower our students as Londoners, and require them to engage with ethical complexity.

Not easy, but tenacity will win 🙂

We all benefit from challenge. I like the collaborative approach to building the curriculum you used

We built a really strong consensus by employing a really broad ranging research team when we built our approach to curriculum. No Leaders just ‘boots on the ground’ teachers. Loads of reading to make it bullet proof. We had to switch the ‘lower prior attainers get easy stuff’ mindset from some.

I think the buy-in via consultancy will be key. Then lots and lots of overcommunication to keep the focus. Let me know how it goes 🙂

Consulting on and clarifying our values, then ensuring our curriculum meets them (while providing aspirational & engaging learning)… Lots of overmessaging.

Thank you. It can be hard to reach an agreement around what that is. How did you navigate that?

Hi Zoe, for me/us it is entitlement, everyone deserves to have access to the best we have to offer. I think most staff would say something close to that but it’s been a hard won change.

I'd be interested to year thoughts on this one.
It's something I pose around PP, behaviour and attendance especially. Do people have the same shared understanding?

Tbh, the whole anti-migrant rhetoric is already making my friends on ILR look at moving.

Of course, they’re all the ones with the money and talent *to* move. Which isn’t what politicians are selling as the consequence of ILR-bashing. But it’s what will happen.
The 10 year wait for Indefinite Leave to Remain will make the UK very unattractive for high skilled workers who often have alternatives. 2019 data (excluding the NHS and universities) shows that high skilled workers on visas are heavily concentrated in multinationals who can move jobs abroad (5/x)
