Using a plant pallet of predominantly plants native to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains with adaptive species and contouring with mounds for deeper rooted species, the plant cover provides habitat for birds and invertebrates.

While with the IBI Group, our very own Kerry Ross of designed and developed construction drawings and led the Parks team in a learning-by-doing exercise to build and plant the two green roofs and to help familiarize the department with extensive green roof technology.

We trialed two different living wall systems.

The exterior living wall was highly experimental, using native and adaptive species. While the wall panels have been relocated to another site, they continue to overwinter successfully despite the thin profile of the system.

A tenant fit-out for Rocky Mountain Soap store in Canmore entailed a design to meet Living Building Challenge standards.

The new prototype store incorporated living walls—one exterior, the other interior—and planted tree, all which was provided by Green T Design.

The building’s water features reduce water consumption, and rainwater is captured on the roofs for reuse in the wash bays for the trucks.

Working with Clark Builders, we provided the planting design, installed the green roof, and maintained it through its establishment period.

We helped design a 2200 ft² green roof to be a visual demonstration of sustainability. The loose-fit garden of ground cover has rows of grasses and uprights species planted in deeper mounds, which serve as “shelter belts” to create friction and slow down the prevailing western wind.

While the demonstration was short- lived with construction resuming on Tower Two, much of the green roofs were decanted to other parts of the building site and a Plus 15 was covered with LiveRoof green roof.

This short-term demonstration was sited on a downtown podium roof in Calgary.

Its purpose was to evaluate two green roof modular systems in various combinations and to document their success in overwintering, watering requirements, resistance to weed pressure as well as the installation process.
