Niche thing from my dissertation: a big downside to subscription or privatized models of bike programs (aside from price point) is the lack of flexibility for resident needs. Ex: Seoul (which operates bikes as a public good) was able to design smaller bikes for youth, women, and elderly folks

The single dad in me was able to effectively budget and purchase all the daughter’s, niece’s and nephew’s Xmas gifts. They are all here. Looking good. Now I must learn to properly wrap.

okay, but, do adults read books? cause I was the only one reading at 8 am this morning at my local coffee shop.
In American high schools, many teenagers are assigned few full books to read from beginning to end — often just one or two per year, according to researchers and thousands of responses to an informal reader survey by The New York Times. trib.al/gNp7kWK

this dynamic has been present since 1992.
American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

the thread aptly notes that this “mission driven” professional culture is a labor control device that promotes acquiescence. the noble mythos of knowledge work is even explicitly deployed for union-busting
This, like many other jobs, is seen as some sort of noble vocation, where its practitioners do it for the community, or because the profession seeks out truth, and therefore payment is an afterthought

We are tradespeople in a dying trade, fighting for scraps while still trying to do the job

The silver lining is the Professor still has his faculty job, but this is explicitly viewpoint discrimination, a message that there is no such thing as faculty governance.
All admin must be aligned with a political party. For all the talk of leftist indoctrination, this is no different from China.
