Shabbat Shalom! First Shabbat as DOCTOR Cantwell-Chavez and it feels AMAZING. This has been 8 years in the making and the combination of relief, gratitude, and happiness is overwhelming.
So the bad news is that Daniel forgot to bring the Chanukiah I asked for him to bring. The good news is that I get to order the Lego set I wanted to order now. (Yellow Chanukiah was the original design; teal Chanukiah is my design)

Extraordinary development in COP30 plenary. President gavelled all decisions quickly, without looking up. Now many countries complaining that they had raised flags but were ignored. President keeps repeating "concerns will be noted in report."

I assigned almost all of Atlas of AI to my students last fall and students really enjoyed it. They said they appreciated the continuity of voice and going deep into a topic. For the next elective course I teach, I plan to integrate more books!
We're back! Today in The Important Work, Helen Choi and Vance Ricks write about assigning @karenhao.bsky.social's Empire of AI to their students in courses where they had not previously assigned books--and how it went. theimportantwork.substack.com/p/we-made-ou...
We made our students read a book!
And we'd do it again

Shabbat shalom and happy 4th anniversary of being married to @chavezye.bsky.social ! Sad to not spend it together but we will get to spend some time together soon. Also grateful for an amazing week at the C40 Mayors Summit in Rio. Amazing connections and insights for our project.

Head Start closures will have far-reaching and long-lasting consequences. Because the million kids who rely on the program don't have other options. And so, we're likely to see:
⬇️maternal employment
⬆️child poverty, hunger, and homelessness
⬇️school readiness and achievement long-term

I am genuinely confused (and potentially concerned) as to why ISA is sending out different messaging and framing to different segments of ISA membership about traveling to the 2026 conference. These are screenshots from three different scholars I know of the "same" email we received today from ISA.

Folks who spend their time talking about US Politics and don't already have a good background in Latin American politics should try to fix that, because I think it's a lot more insightful than European politics at this particular moment.

This whole thread is really interesting but I really encourage educators to focus on this part- this was is a great and throughtful approach to navigating accessibility needs in the classroom re: tech.
Yes, though not for reading (I had a plan for that, in case—40% of our student body have accommodations of some kind so it seemed likely) but for in-class (laptop for notes). I didn’t ban laptops outright, but I explained the course format (not a lecture; students are writing independent research

This is barbaric
He was too poor to hire an attorney.

One of his co defendants was able to hire a good lawyer & testified against Boyd for lesser sentence

His trial was only two days.

What did he request? A firing squad. He requested not to suffer.

They suffocated him to death instead.

Shabbat shalom! I had a great last two weeks traveling back to Canada and the US for some guest talks and to see my dogs (and Dan). This week was bookended by lost luggage (again) and having a little health flare up (again). Thankfully, not anything some soup, liquids, and rest couldn’t mostly fix.

I’m just loving the fact that the internet has collectively regarded something as mainstream as a brazen museum jewellery heist as a wholesome breath of fresh air in this fucked-up timeline.

Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.

No phones, no staff, nothing.

I had to escort her into the Capitol on Wed bc Capitol police must treat her as a public visitor until she’s sworn in. And solo visitors aren’t allowed during shutdown!
Johnson: "Grijalva should be working for her constituents right now. I don't know what she's doing. I keep seeing their political stunt videos. She should be in her office. She should be working or in the district for her constituents" (Grijalva is not in fact a Rep. b/c Johnson refuses to seat her)

In Chicago, four vehicles descended and eight ICE agents moved in to kidnap a child.

She screams, “I’m 15,” as ICE yanks her from the car and kneels on her neck.

This is not about immigration enforcement.

It's about terrorizing Americans.
