This whole thread is amazing, but I especially appreciate @tedmccormick.bsky.social's observation here about humanity and its importance in the face of generative AI soullessness.

Generative AI, in both form and content, and whether looked on favourably or critically, seems to embody a collective hopelessness about the prospect of human learning and creativity, if not human knowledge altogether. It’s as if climate change had fans.

New on the UM CETL blog today: A recap of last week's workshop exploring when and why students choose to read for class. You can find lots of great resources, including the slides from the event, at Graduate Teaching Fellow Sarah Ligon's write-up! umcetl.ghost.io/recap-when-a...
Recap: When and Why Do Students Read for Class?
One possible hurdle preventing students from completing course reading assignments is the gap between the reading skills of students and those of their instructors.

I've done a lottt of travel this year, and a big shout-out/major kudos goes to the AGLS organizers for offering a conference meal that was delicious and pretty darn inclusive! It's hard to do, and they did it well.

Someone please alert the Chief Justice that courtrooms are failing to stop discriminating on the basis of race. 🙄

Bryan Stevenson is the best of us, and I adore him to bits. I am angry on his behalf for the million tiny cuts he experiences doing heroic work.

This is great. Being a political scientist at the moment is a bit like being a climate scientist a few years back. You can see clearly catastrophe is coming, but most people seem blithely unaware of it

An outstanding interview. Patrick Iber of Dissent Magazine has interviewed the legendary Polish political scientist Adam Przeworski about de-democratisation in the USA, and what lessons he’s gleaned from Chile, Peru & beyond.

Iber’s questions are stellar. Przeworski’s answers, chillingly candid.

My latest column for the Chronicle of Higher Ed is now live. It's an argument for including AI-critical voices in campus conversations and policymaking workgroups, and I'm proud to get this dissenting piece into the mainstream genAI/higher ed discourse. Please read and share if you're so inclined 🙂
Advice | Sometimes We Resist AI for Good Reasons
Why higher ed needs to listen to the contrarians in setting policies on using tools like ChatGPT in faculty work.

For many years when teaching American Government to undergrads, I started the semester by reading Brene' Brown's chapter, "People are Hard to Hate Close Up. Move In." We need that lesson now more than ever. Here's an excerpt. brenebrown.com/articles/201...
A Ministry of Presence
An experience of collective pain does not deliver us from grief or sadness; it is a ministry of presence. These moments remind us that we are not alone in our darkness and that our broken heart is con...

I'm not linking to the piece/naming the author intentionally, because it's a fraught time for anyone to speak--but especially those working in higher ed. But we must find ways to connect with one another, even imperfectly, because doing so is healing. Connection is the antidote to hate.

I appreciated the piece I read yesterday and again this morning about the importance of talking to students about events unfolding around us. Especially the idea of "rigorous empathy": "to ask why people we disagree with believe what they do, and what fears and hopes animate their positions."

#Disability advocate friends: I thought I bookmarked this site, but now I can't find it -- it was a tool for assessing the accessibility of physical spaces, and it was a checklist of sorts. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyone have a link you can share? Help me jog my memory!
