I'm just a girl, standing in front of a hemlock woolly adelgid population, asking it how much genetic variation is present.

Introducing ** Incendiamoeba **, a eukaryote that can live at temperatures well beyond what we thought possible. 63C!!

Read @hbrappap.bsky.social thread to see what we’ve already started to learn from this amazing organism!

So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

Them: It can blur lines.
Me internally: But it is a fine line tattoo with faces. 😭😭😭
Just had an MRI and no one told me I wasn't supposed to get a tattoo right before an MRI! Apparently you are supposed to wait for 6 weeks! Everything still looks fine so I'm praying it stays that way. 😭

Another baby has just died of whooping cough in Kentucky, thanks to RFK Jr. and his merry band of anti-vaxxers.

My feeling toward RFK Jr. and the Republican Senators who confirmed him is utter contempt.

Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Rather than just copying and modifying other people's code, I'm starting to write my own now and I'm very proud.

I mean, at least we got something going for us.
good work guys you picked a fight in which Dems can stand up out of their permanent defensive crouch and go “our guy is a fucking astronaut and you’re an alcoholic tv host”
Gallego to Hegseth: "You will never ever be half the man that Sen. Kelly is. You, sir, are a coward. And the fact that you are following this order from the president shows how big of a coward you are. I can't wait until you are no longer the secretary of defense."

Realizing you're going to have to live with chronic back pain for the rest of your life is mentally exhausting & demoralizing.
November 24, 2025 at 5:45 PM
Bad news: My back hurts really bad today.
Good news: It should be obvious if the nerve block works.
November 24, 2025 at 1:46 PM
Since the hip surgery didn't really help with my low back pain, I now have a nerve block test tomorrow. Fingers crossed this actually helps a small amount.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

“You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,” the incredulous driver said on the recorded 911 call. “It absolutely shattered my windshield.”

The dispatcher calmly responded, “OK. I do believe you, honestly,” then laughed.
