It wasn't until the mid 1920s that Augustus John began painting flowers as an alternative to portraiture; this Begonia (1928) would have been grown in the garden at Fryern Court, John's home on the edge of the New Forest.

It was a local lake in Bærum, Oslo that inspired Kitty Kielland to create this painting. She spent the summer of 1886 at Fleskum Farm; 'the Fleskum Summer' is often seen as inaugurating neo-romanticism in Norwegian art, Kielland was a practitioner well into the 1890s.

In the 1860s Monet was so poor that he traded his paintings for food and rent.

Clay goblet from Early Bronze Age Troy.

Known as a depas goblet after the Homeric ‘depas amphikypellon', recent residue analysis shows these two-handled vessels were used for drinking wine some 4,250 years ago!

Mayor elect Mamdani will be sworn in at the old City Hall subway station (closed in 1945). Opened in 1904, its tiled arches are the work of Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino Moreno and his son. Guastavino also worked at St John the Divine and Grand Central Terminal.
