Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

Elon Musk is worse at hiding it but this is the problem with all billionaires: they are a threat to democratic governance. They have an insatiable need to own and control everything. If you want to be free you have to curb their power, and demand political leaders who understand that

They’re killing people as a twitter joke. It’s depraved. Can’t let yourself lose the capacity to be appalled and disgusted and outraged by this.

The last month of the anti-Mamdani campaign was an absolutely shameful undertaking, an attempt to rip the city and Democratic coalition apart and I'm very happy to see it failed.

For most of the last decade, our media and political class has panicked over the idea that progressives were intruding on free speech rights by loudly criticizing people with unpopular views.

Anyway, here's far-right federal paramilitaries advertising that they'll rip down pro-immigrant messages.
ICE just posted this video taking down the sign in Mount Pleasant on Twitter.

it’s wild how once they decide to compromise a little they end up instantly surrendering their entire capacity for critical independent thinking and become these brainless drones. Trump support of any degree just fundamentally incompatible with any kind of free thought.
Markwayne Mullin: "President Trump -- possibly the greatest president of all time, definitely of our lifetime. And i's amazing that you and I get to call Mr President, or Mr Trump our friend. It's amazing that he can be just a regular guy and league with such confidence that he does."

If the Supreme Court thinks universal injunctions are unconstitutional, to wait until *now* to say that, in this of all cases, with this of all presidents, is a devastating indictment of both its impartiality and its prudence.

this is a good wake up call for elected Dems to realize what’s happening and what’s going to happen

not generally, not in the abstract, but to them personally

shut it all down and start acting like you’re in immediate danger, because you are

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

As any serious observer predicted, the authoritarians who have taken power are now using those exact chimeras of leftwing, “woke” radicalism that the “Free Speech” punditry legitimized and perpetuated as pretext for a comprehensive purge of “deviant” voices. Eternal shame on all those enablers.

One sign that we are living under an authoritarian regime is that a lot of people are acting like they are living under an authoritarian regime.
The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

No Dem Senator has to follow Schumer here. This is a weak stategic move driven by fear and learned helplessness. Don't follow him. He's leading the party into irrelevance and helping Trump and Musk in the process.

Call your Dem Senators and ask them not to join Schumer's surrender tomorrow.
SCHUMER just now: "While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Cynicism is not “savvy.” The idea that nothing matters anymore and all is lost is self-defeating. And it’s the easy way out. This is harder: Figuring out ways to push back.
