I like ratios, particularly those per capita ones.
Meyrink was a German writer living in Prague. His sarcasm targeted arrogance esp. in academia & the military.

Just looking at this picture. They both know that the rest of their lives they will be saddled with having enabled the unlawful takeover of American political power by a madman.

Check out 'language reactor', a browser plugin. It can add subtitles to any video source.
Just used it to subtitle the (quite hateful) speech of a Japanese politician that I recorded on my phone a few weeks ago on my first ever trip to Japan.

It's not even Trumps. Its Putins Diktat.

It is more than the Democrats that will support Ukraine, it is most of the American people. Trump and Putin can't change that.
Americans will find ways to recover their democracy and a lot sooner than 3 years from now.

It is not a peace plan. It is not 'real-politik' either as Ignatius claimed in WaPo.
It is the verbatim wet dream of Putin and his entourage.
It won't work out for them.
Ukraine can defend itself with just the help of the Europeans and other friends.
But it won't have to. Trump is not the US.

I spent a lot of last night chatting to Ukrainian friends, garnering reactions to Trump's order to surrender, & also to Zelenskyy's words in that emotional address to the nation.

Later, I'll bring some of their thoughts, but the thing they all agree on is Trump is a Russian asset.

It's the same ratio in Europe, 1/5 of energy is electricity, 4/5 fuels, and then a lot of electricity is generated from fossil fuels too. All I'm saying is we are very far away from any solution and underestimate the size of the problem. Blaming someone is always easy but should be resisted.

It's not big oil that consumes all that oil. It is us.

So I asked AI:
"Saudi Arabia executed 345 people in 2024, a record number for the country. In the first six months of 2025, at least 180 people were executed, a pace that suggests another record may be set. "
Why keep repeating it if it was a mistake?
