The total failure of elite accountability. An 🇺🇸 tradition dating back at least to 1865 & Appomattox. The reason all of the awful & illegal things keep happening in 🇺🇸 politics is because there are never any legal or personal consequences for all of the awful & illegal things happening in 🇺🇸 politics.
Chapter 1: Grant Committed The Original Sin At Appomattox & Afterward by not demanding unconditional surrender & not ensuring that Lee hanged or rotted in jail for the rest of his life for unprecedented & unforgivable treason that caused the death of 2% of the population of the Republic.
Also, the failure of Reconstruction is the through-line of US politics, from 1867-2023, & its roots were unfortunately also planted at Appomattox. We should finish it belatedly now, so we can finally be an actual representative democracy of equal rights for everyone.
