Lastly, Petro's pledge not to sign new oil and gas contracts is fiercely opposed by myriad actors so even a COP30 roadmap on FF would likely do little to dampen the hostility. This opposition is something I explored in this @climdevjournal.bsky.social article: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Securing an ambitious, orderly and just fossil fuel roadmap at COP30 could help candidates differentiate themselves between those supporting such a roadmap and others backing fossil fuel expansion which would put them at odds with the international consensus and potentially donor countries.

Many candidates hoping to run in the legislative and presidential elections in Colombia next year are keen to jettison parts of Petro's just energy transition agenda including by signing new oil and gas contracts and backing fracking.

The Petro government has made the just energy transition a big part of its domestic and foreign policy.

Colombia's efforts in Belém to secure support for its declaration on FF phaseout and work with other Parties on a FF roadmap also need to be considered within the context of elections in 2026.
