it was the "I read papers, they seem good" which made me think that Brett is doing more of the latter (also because I'm wondering if there's a parallel with the way he defends contemporary jazz against people who claim that most of it is bad compared to stuff in the 50s etc.)

following this conversation, I'm wondering whether it isn't just that you have different standards, but also that you have different attitudes to how you judge goodness, i.e., comparing works relative to a standard vs. appreciating the value you get from any individual work on its own terms
