That's nonsense. I'm done.

I don't forget Congress should be doing their job. I've got a billion complaints about Congress—how the GOP has completely capitulated to enabling Trump, how the fossilized leadership of the Dems has constrained their ability to be a nimble, proactive opposition. It's not either/or.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
Powerful, necessary words from @radiofreetom.bsky.social, someone I often weigh in on his politics posts to disagree with from the progressive perspective. But not here. This is his field—you might say his "expertise"—& I am genuinely appreciative of what he's saying. It's why I follow him.

She's a self-serving, grifting piece of shit.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
You're welcome to believe that. The two most outspoken liberal justices say they're making shit up and plenty of other legal scholars do, too.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
No, they aren't. They are actively aiding Trump. If it was as you say, the results wouldn't be so overwhelmingly one-sided. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is telling us, whether you want to listen to her or not.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
...off the boat to be chewed up by them to get who? To win how? Be explicit as to who you define as "the most radical & fringe portions" that should be throttled. Go ahead, I challenge you. You effing think that you can just toss some people to the wolves & that others of us won't be demobilized? /3
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
So explain what you mean by "throttle back on the most radical and fringe portions of our electorate?" BE explicit. What the fuck do you mean? People like you hide behind euphemisms like that & "moderating your position." We face a eliminationist opposition & you want to throw some Dem voters... /2
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
If you advocate throwing members of your own coalition under the bus—in the present time, literally threatening some of their lives—to prove to people outside your coalition they should vote for you, well, then, that's just not an electorally attractive quality. Loser. /1
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
Lower courts should start ignoring them & more lower court judges should call them out. The corrupt Supreme Court is cynically forcing on lower court judges the choice of being true to their oaths & commitment to the rule of law or acceding to the Supreme Court's bad faith gamesmanship. /2
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
They are NOT ruling on "what the Constitution and the laws say." They are making shit up to reach their policy preferences on behalf of dictatorship & oligarchy. & on top of that, no longer even bothering to explain their reasoning. /1
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
That was no "mistake." None of these decisions are "mistakes." They are deliberate attacks on the rule of law & democracy on behalf of a tyrant.

Or do you trust John Robeerts, Brett Kavanaugh et al over the words of particularly justices Brown Jackson and Sotomayor?
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
Tom's a Republican, albeit an exiled pro-democracy one. He's incapable of grokking the appeal of a Zohran Mamdani. I'm a 69 yr old Dem & I've HAD IT w/ the gerontocracy of the party. Most of my similarly aged friends feel the same & my younger ones even more so. PLEASE give me "young & energizing!"
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
& if you think "young & energizing" automatically means "can't actually win," let me introduce you to a gerontocratic party w/ its brand in the toilet because it has fossilized elderly leadership. & I say that as a 69 year old.

This effing party wants to run 77 y.o. Janet Mills over Graham Platner.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
There's no such thing as "the middle." The problem w/ that idea is that by choosing GOP Lite candidates to supposedly appeal to "the middle" you end up running the big risk of tamping down enthusiasm from hardcore base Democratic voters. & elections are won when excitement radiates from the base.
hankhoffmanct.bsky.social
This is a post I think is very important to consider as we approach how to view this moment of crisis. Many of my friends are very active & engaged but most people aren't & THEIR lives do not feel touched by crisis.

As the lives of most Germans from 1933-39 did NOT feel touched by crisis.

Watching so many people in high places go through the motions of polling and median-voter whispering can make you feel like you're in Bodysnatchers. It's worth a reminder that the typical experience of tyranny is...basically normal life. Which means we have to will ourselves to fight harder.
The Median Experience Of Tyranny
If the politics of tyranny were self-discrediting, we wouldn't need mantras like "never again."

The very first riot after a George Floyd protest was started by a white supremacist nicknamed "Umbrella Man."

He spraypainted "free shit" on an AutoZone, broke the windows, and encouraged others to come in. abcnews.go.com/amp/US/man-h...
Man who helped ignite George Floyd riots identified as white supremacist: Police
A masked umbrella-wielding man helped incite riots and looting in the immediate aftermath of George Floyd's death, police said.

This is what every Democratic state needs to do, tell its state university leaders that they will lose all state appropriations if they sign the compact. Take the decision out of feckless college administrators’ hands.
mkirschenbaum.bsky.social
Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.
sivav.bsky.social
The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.
