We've got a little update from the excavations on the lawns of the Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire.
Angus Wainwright, NT Archaeologist, says: "We teamed up with @oxfordarchaeology.bsky.social and Cambridge Archaeology Field Group to carry out this dig in front of hundreds of visitors." 🧵

I've tried to spend the night in both. The roundhouse is way more comfortable!

A big shout out to the wonderful illustrator Carys Ink. She did the illustrations for the Cherish Project and I'm super impressed by work we are currently commissioning. If you have a project in need of an inspiring, inclusive illustration do check her out.

Contempt for listening that good meetings entail? One reason I love my current job is that there is wide recognition that meetings matter.

Our sport obsessed 11 yr old was looking for the sports section of the Church Times yesterday at a relatives house. Now I'm wondering why not, and my mind is convinced there is a Father Ted episode I've missed.

I often talk about the importance of making archaeological information and understanding of places accessible to colleagues as well as other communities of interest if we want archaeology to play its part in a sustainable future. It's my version of worldbuilding but not described it in that way.

Love this. I actually think there is a bit too much naff augmented reality going on in archaeology at the moment that falls short, but points Colleen makes about world building not needing to be digital, & the importance of the way we present arch info to facilitate world building really resonated

A brief visit to Hamford Water and Beaumont Quay today. Apparently these stones were once part of London Bridge, and now provide a pretty idyllic launch point for paddle boards and crab lines. buildinglondon.blog/2022/02/25/3...

A fab day out helping @rspbscotland.bsky.social @bumblebeetrust.bsky.social #Balmoral rangers survey for rare invertebrates today. Our 10 yr old was chuffed to find the first broken-belted bumblebee recorded on the estate, sadly no small scabious mining bees but several dark bordered beauty moths.

I was trying to work out what tragedy this collection of memorials commemorated, an Internet search later & I now know these are from actual people for a fictional character shot in an episode of Peaky Blinders filmed here in Portsoy c.2021.
Which other memorials to fictional people are there?

It’s Norfolk Day, and to celebrate, East of England archaeologist Angus is asking "Did Nelson’s naval ancestors sail from Brancaster?"

Just off the coastal path at Brancaster on the north Norfolk Coast is a bumpy field, home to local dog walkers and the odd skylark. 🧵

Holidaying in Scotland we came across a pretty much decomposed and semiburied red deer skeleton. I got the kids (my then 5 yr old, 2 yr old and 3 of my friends aged between 5 and 10) to help me excavate it. I still have the near complete skeleton in a box in my shed
