What active #acoustics can resolve:
#Fjord temperature–salinity structure & mixing
#Glacier terminus morphology
• Subglacial discharge, plume dynamics
Why it matters:Precise observations help constrain projections of climate-change impact & improve understanding of glacier–ocean interface.

It uses #machinelearning for #visual #localization underwater with photos & #novelviewsynthesis to augment training data & improve estimation at unseen viewpoints. We enhance robustness by fusing with more sensors via a Kalman filter & evaluated it across clear & turbid waters in #Singapore. (2/2)

This region is poorly studied due to calving hazards. In 2023, GLAMOR collected thermohaline+acoustic+ video data right up next to the #glacier terminus—likely one of the 1st such v.close direct surveys of this zone. These observations enhance our understanding of #polar ablation processes here (2/2).

We aimed for a holistic system for comprehensive #bioacoustic monitoring of marine mammals. Successfully deployed this in 2022 and used this to lower-bound the no. of simultaneous vocalizing animals in doi.org/10.1109/OCEA.... Hopefully, we manage to use it for longer monitoring in years ahead (3/3)
Acoustic detector for multiple vocalizing marine mammal individuals
Marine mammals play an important role in the marine ecosystems but are increasingly threatened by human activities. To better protect these species it is helpful to understand their spatio-temporal vi...

..of the water surface at the time of the call, & displays these results alongside recorded environmental parameters in real-time. The idea is that while acoustics is a great way to trigger detection, its useful to look at the scene multi-modally to get an overall 'picture' of what's happening.(2/3)

This is a big step toward using acoustic monitoring for large-scale, long-term tracking of glacier melt—helping us understand ice losses around the world. 🌎🔉 (4/4)

To tackle this, we created a physics-based model to explain how the sound varies across the glacial bay! The result? We can now estimate how much sound melting glaciers produce, and directly link this to what drives melt (like water temperature) and its outcome (how fast the glaciers retreat). (3/4)

This work is really to my heart. It took years of painstakingly collecting acoustic data in icy environments, building physics models, and unraveling the story hidden in the glacier sounds. Glacier sounds are complex—changing depending on where you listen, like a natural surround sound system. (2/4)
