Public schools can’t afford to lose more teachers. Black teachers make up only 6% of the profession and are leaving at higher rates. Stress, lack of respect, and pay gaps (earning about 6% less than white peers) are driving them out.

IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVE: What I have not seen anyone discussing is that Nexstar pulling Kimmel, forcing ABC’s hand, comes as Nexstar is leading the way for the industry on trying to get FCC approval for media consolidation. www.poynter.org/business-wor...
Nexstar’s takeover of Tegna would require an overhaul of FCC ownership rules - Poynter
The proposed sale would exceed the FCC’s 39% cap, igniting debate among broadcasters, unions and press groups

Respectfully disagree: 1) in fact it is unusual for a democracy w/ this level of GDP to turn authoritarian & so quickly; 2) the weakness of both institutions (congress & courts) and individuals (Schumer etc) is shocking. Would take less than 10 people in congress or 2 SC justices to stop all this.

What America is going through is not unusual in historical terms. Plenty of examples like it today elsewhere in the world.
What makes it unusual is the rapid collapse from a set of widely espoused norms and values that centered on liberty. It is the sacking of the shining city on hill that shocks.

something to keep in mind is that everything the right is currently doing to trans people is just what they have wanted for decades to do to gay people; they just can’t get away with doing the latter right now

“Debate Me” culture is not organic, endemic, or apolitical. This mode of high jacking discourse is and has been central to a 30-year conservative training program that has produced untold numbers of people to do this for every reason but “civil discourse”

It's wild to me how ostensibly smart people cannot/could not/will not see what is so obvious.

@mmasnick.bsky.social nails it. And my hunch is we'd be a better society if the Very Serious People with the Very Serious Ideas opened their fucking eyes.

There are many problems with this statement, but Klein’s fundamental error reveals something much more dangerous: he’s mistaking performance for discourse, spectacle for persuasion. Kirk wasn’t showing up to campuses to “talk with anyone who would talk to him.” He was showing up armed with a string of logical fallacies, nonsense talking points, and gotcha questions specifically designed to enrage inexperienced college students so he could generate viral social media clips of himself “owning the libs.”

I am having a hard time reconciling "Charlie Kirk was a fierce advocate of open dialogue and free expression" with "we must identify and persecute everyone who is insufficiently mournful"
After Charlie Kirk's death, teachers and professors nationwide fired or disciplined over social media posts
At least a dozen faculty and staff have faced fallout over insensitive comments online.

coates is genuinely a generational writer
What are we to make of a man who called for the execution of the American president, and then was executed himself? What are we to make of an NFL that, on one hand, encourages us to "End Racism," and, on the other, urges us to commemorate an unreconstructed white supremacist? And what of the writers, the thinkers, and the pundits who cannot separate the great crime of Kirk's death from the malignancy of his public life? Can they truly be so ignorant to the words of a man they have so rushed to memorialize? I don't know. But the most
telling detail in Klein's column was that, for all his praise, there was not a single word in the piece from Kirk himself.

And Italian relatives of mine only learned in their 20s, I’m talking 2010s, that it was neo-Nazis and not anarchists. They lived their whole lives in Italy thinking it was anarchists. Their parents likely still think that.

Thinking about the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing and how Italy's security services blamed it on anarchists, arrested nearly 100 activists and threw one of them out the 4th floor window of the police station.

The bombing was carried out by a neo-fascist group with ties to the state security services.

I know jumping to politically-advantageous conclusions is just what we do now, but its still striking how many right wing folks have immediately jumped to "violent leftist," as if there hasn't been a sustained, decadelong hate campaign against Charlie Kirk from those to his right.
