I'd forgotten about Solzhenitsyn and The Gulag Archipelago. We all read it as students when it came out in Britain in the 70s. It's different in the West now. Too many are materially comfortable enough to be able to eschew freedom.

For my American friends: remember when you were mocking Russians for that they did nothing to oppose their country turning in dictatorship? How some of you said "this would never happen in America" and tried to convince me, that you are "freedom loving nations" and that you would defend democracy?

We stopped kids playing on the streets because we prioritised cars. Then we closed their youth club, sold their playgrounds, built on open spaces, and monetised everything else. Now, we're going to ban them from the only affordable spaces they have because it's too complicated to regulate. Cowards.
