Normalize using K% instead of K/9
and if you want an example of how a bad barrel rate can be offset by good everything else, look no further than the rookie season for $300 million man Yoshinobu Yamamoto!

I’m not sure there’s a single player available this offseason where my opinion differs from most fans’ more than it does with Nick Pivetta. Led all SPs in Stuff+, has had 1 throwing-arm injury in his major league career, and did this last year. He’s got a QO attached, but bring him to me anyway.

for comparison, this is Max Kepler coming off his career-worst year, and you can probably get him for like $10M without giving up any prospect capital

this isn’t the kind of player Anthopoulos has really ever paid serious money to, though. Ozuna, Donaldson, Soler, Murphy, Olson - they’re all very high xwOBA guys with elite bat speed, not ground ball/soft line drive guys (which is what Bellinger has become) who’ve gotten extremely lucky with BABIP

for the record, this was 2022 story at the plate! definitely better than 2024 arcia but then, as you pointed out, virtually everyone was

savant dashboards can be kinda reductive but I just can’t think of a nice thing to say about Bellinger. He doesn’t strike out much? He’s a neutral defender? There’s a reason the Cubs are desperately shopping him.

I’d much rather do 1 yr with Kepler or Conforto (or even go multiple years on TON).

Pivetta had the best Stuff+ rating of any SP, played with MLB’s worst defense over the last two years by OAA, and had a Savant profile that looked like this. I think you’re underestimating the strength of his market (and the degree to which front offices won’t judge him by his ERA)
