Normalize using K% instead of K/9
man i hope this is wrong!

were you encouraged by Sale’s velo yesterday? command was obviously not good
April 14, 2025 at 1:27 PM
yep, and no help on the way in near future FA classes. It’s Bichette this winter (almost certainly too rich for AA) and then … JP Crawford maybe in two years?

i did a little homework on this over the offseason and it’s actually harder to find one than you’d think! there are ~25 shortstops reliably better than Arcia and the vast majority are either young franchise cornerstones or signed to megadeals. the few who aren’t (like miggy ro) play for rivals

isn’t it just slightly pricey depth? he was an average-y player just a year ago and if something happens to Kelenic, Verdugo could be the strong side of the RF platoon (while Acuña’s out) or take the 4th OF job (when he’s back).

Allan Winans should be off the Braves’ rotation competition list since he’s no longer in the org

Also, Daysbel Hernández would be a lock if he didn’t have options, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he started the year in Gwinnett while they rotated through non-optionable guys

it’s like if people waved away insider trading with “but my company encourages OTHERS to buy its stock!” the whole “people in sports can’t bet on sports” thing is all about leveraging nonpublic info
February 3, 2025 at 10:19 PM
that’s fair! agreed that the playoff rules changing makes it hard to look 20 years back.

but seems like a safe bet that 20 years from now, the Yankees are connected to the top FAs on the market and the Reds are looking for reclamation projects, right? while the NFL is truly unpredictable?

one angle of parity i think goes underdiscussed is baseball’s lack of intergenerational parity, esp. compared to the NFL

the Yankees will probably never have a season like, say, the Rockies did in 2024. their fans are guaranteed at least competence annually. not so for any NFL team.

the other side of the coin is who wants to do a 1-year deal for him and give up a bunch of picks/international money to do so?

Dallas Keuchel was in this situation in 2019; signed a one-year deal midseason with Atlanta after the QO was no longer applicable
January 25, 2025 at 4:05 PM
why is it confusing? it seems
like perfectly normal business for a team like Cleveland. trade a 1-year rental for a young pitcher who’s sucked but has intriguing stuff model grades and a comp pick, then turn around and sign a similar (but much older) quality player for the same price

i’ve always thought “have listened” must have some meaning beyond the literal “someone asked about him and they heard it” because otherwise, why don’t we have pieces on literally every player? “dodgers have listened on betts”? “royals have listened on witt?”

Suzuki’s indubitably more valuable (a better player on a better deal) but also reporting is they weren’t going to trade him unless they found no suitors for Bellinger, right?
December 18, 2024 at 12:17 AM
and if you want an example of how a bad barrel rate can be offset by good everything else, look no further than the rookie season for $300 million man Yoshinobu Yamamoto!

in recent years - Anthony Swarzak, Kevan Smith
December 16, 2024 at 3:30 PM
this was a boneheaded play, but i don’t really think it makes this broad point you think it does. did team sports exist 32 years ago? because Leon Lett did the same thing then!
December 15, 2024 at 9:35 PM
for comparison, this is Max Kepler coming off his career-worst year, and you can probably get him for like $10M without giving up any prospect capital
December 14, 2024 at 3:21 AM
this isn’t the kind of player Anthopoulos has really ever paid serious money to, though. Ozuna, Donaldson, Soler, Murphy, Olson - they’re all very high xwOBA guys with elite bat speed, not ground ball/soft line drive guys (which is what Bellinger has become) who’ve gotten extremely lucky with BABIP
December 14, 2024 at 3:16 AM
Sasaki is like everyone’s offseason bingo free space this year :)

I think they can improve a lot in LF. Kelenic can’t be a default member of your ideal lineup next year, and as it stands, uhhh Eli White would have to start 40+ games till Acuña gets back/when he needs DH days
December 13, 2024 at 8:49 PM
give me Suzuki over Bellinger!
December 13, 2024 at 8:47 PM
who’s on your list now?

hitter-wise i’d like to see if the cubs will deal Suzuki, given his expressed unhappiness as a DH (which will certainly continue now)

pitcher-wise i just feel like the dylan cease trade gets done this year. and i covet jeff hoffman in FA
December 13, 2024 at 7:57 PM
right, should’ve said “even with bellinger presumptively gone”
