We discuss her recent return to Syria, we talk about the risks of online activism, the politics of exile, and what it means to keep speaking out about Syria & Palestine.

New video up!

In this episode, I speak with Nahla Sarraj, a psychiatry resident and humanitarian who works with SEMA and UOSSM about her return to Syria after 17 years.

We unpack what’s changed, what hasn’t, and the emotional toll of coming home.

May Gazans be fed and may Palestine be free.

If it seems like I did not push back enough, forgive me. I couldn't find it in myself to police his speech.

Did an emergency episode with @astroramiemad.bsky.social who spoke about what his family has gone through in the last week and expressed his trauma.

Take a deep breath and listen.

Syrians must reckon with where our current government is falling short, not brush it aside.

If there is one frustration that people everywhere tell me, it is that the moderate voices among the Kurds, among the Muwahidin Druze and among the Alawites are not being heard (in the West).

There are extremists among all sects in Syria, but most, despite demands, tell me that they are Syrians first and do not want separation from the rest of Syria in the northeast, the coastal areas/Homs and Swayda/Jaramana/A. Sahnaya. And much more:

The Bibas boys, like many innocent Palestinian children as well, paid for sins they did not commit or have any control over. Anyone with a conscious should be holding space in their heart for these angels, just as they should for the thousands of innocent Palestinian babies brutally murdered.

"All those who lament Bashar al-Assad’s fall and gloat over the Israeli bombardment of Syria should do well to reflect on why Israel is attacking now. Clearly a cohesive, democratic Syria would be a much stronger proponent of Palestinian liberation than the Assadist tyranny ever was."

When it comes to news on Syria, it's wise to treat initial claims as rumors and wait for verification.

Check @EekadFacts and @VeSyria to see if they have reported on it.

The longer you wait the more accurate the report likely will be. The worst thing is to jump to conclusions.

I recommend listening to those free Syrians commenting on Ukraine. This is how the ingredients of an organically grown alliance look like. Russian aggression has truly unified those two peoples.

Democracy takes practice. Those without blood on their hands should be welcome, to—even encouraged to criticize.

We should use our newfound freedom to practice public dialogue and dissent in order to advocate for transparency and accountability, even if progress on reforms is slow.

It's not too soon to criticize Jolani (Ahmad Sharaa) or how the transition is being handled. We need to remain disciplined, but we also need a free and safe space for protest and criticism. A (healthy) opposition keeps democracy in check.

Even the bad-faith actors should be protected.

Assadists in the region/West are losing their minds as the world sees Syria defy their 14year doomsday predictions about Assad’s fall.

Desperate, they fixate on the checks and balances pro-revolution Syrians use to hold HTS accountable, spamming timelines with the nonsense Patrick spouts below
