Finally, Cllr Waseem Zaffar MBE closed the discussion by outlining the progress made on cleaning the air in Birmingham, and praising Sadiq Khan's work in London.

📣 "We need the government to mandate action at the local level. We need a new Clean Air Act"

We were grateful to have Dr Mike McKean from the Royal College of Paediatrics @rcpch.bsky.social also join the HAC event to call for clean air to be recognised as a human right.

📣 "We have a big problem with not thinking about health holistically and not putting enough money into prevention"

Liz from @mumsforlungs.bsky.social reminded us that Manchester is the most polluted city in the UK, with a recent 33% increase in babies and toddlers admitted to hospital with breathing issues. Political leadership and School Streets needed in Manchester and across UK. 🚸

Barry Gardiner MP gave the audience food for thought, arguing that everyone harmed by pollution should be able to bring a case against the government, learning from the story of @ellarobertafdn.bsky.social. He rightly called for a new Clean Air Act - A HAC campaign!

John Whitby MP passionately described air pollution as "an issue that's all around us. Where children play, where they live" and made the first call of the day for new @who.int-aligned air quality targets. Excellent to hear John raise the harms of burning wood too ☣️🔥

We were thrilled to host a lively discussion this week at the Labour Party Conference, in partnership with @thefabians.bsky.social.

Panellists discussed clean air justice and what it would mean for Labour to lead on this issue. ⚖️

We are very pleased that work to tackle toxic air in London meant the Capital met legal air pollution limits for the first time in 2024! ☁️

This is a Londonwide average. More to do for areas like Brixton and Lewisham to comply. But there's no doubt this news will improve Londoners' health ❤️

NEW: London has achieved the historic milestone of meeting the legal limits for nitrogen dioxide for the first time in 2024 - 184 years earlier than experts predicted.

Tomorrow marks the ten year anniversary of #Dieselgate. It is unbelievable that, ten years after this scandal broke, we are still breathing in excess emissions from diesel cars, and nothing has been done about it in the UK. #AirPollution

"We’ve got to the point where the burden of ill health caused by #AirPollution is so huge, I’m asking myself: ‘What will it take to make the public demand more action?’." Well said @ellarobertafdn.bsky.social.

Such a powerful read about the rise of #LungCancer in non-smoking, healthy young women.
‘I was told I had two weeks to live’ – why are so many young, fit, non-smoking women getting lung cancer?
For decades, lung cancer has been viewed as a disease of older men who smoked. Now, cases among young women are on the rise and doctors are baffled. Could air pollution be behind it?

Air pollution costs countries up to 6.5% of GDP every year.

The clock is ticking in the race for clean air, and there are no valid excuses to slow action.
