I like to talk about: narrative, paratext, a/b/memoir, digital culture, ed policy/law, + pop culture things (musicals 👀).

I never comment on Current Events.

Ah! The franchise that helped me beat insomnia and regulate my sleep habits. Careful though they are powerful. The only thing that can knock me out faster than one of those Lord of the Rings movies is an X Men movie.
The third Hobbit movie in particular is a filmmaking crime

It's my christmas holidays. Of course I'm staying up late on a weeknight, alternating between cleaning my fridge and reading about Lancastrian heraldry. Who among us is not?

Tucson 2025. There's a pop-up vendor at Food City where you can buy fresh masa for your Christmas tamales, in original or in "Doritos Ranch" flavor. Choose wisely. Choose both. 🫔🫔🫔

"I never speak about politics in public, but when I do, all I've ever been known to say is the occasional 'Piazzale Loreto.' And not one word more!"

"My most daring idea is to refuse."

YES.
"This promise of an AI future, is really just a collective anxiety that wealthy people have about how well they're gonna be able to control us in the future."

- @tressiemcphd.bsky.social with an absolute mic drop moment about AI bullshit.

Incredible words.
Listen to all of it!

It is raining pretty hard where I am right now, but the song that has landed like a butterfly on my brain is Otis Redding's "I Can See Clearly Now."

The oldies really are the goodies.

Dogs are the best people.
Cats are the truest people.
People need to stop complaining about a lack of good role models. They're everywhere and they have 3-4 legs.

@americanair.bsky.social America's second biggest disappointment
I scored a $150 Arizona Trails Members Only mug and I'd like to thank #AmericanAirlines for promising me the carryon bag it was in would be gate to gate checked and NOT end up in cargo because now I get to give my dad pottery shards for Christmas and who doesn't love that? ✈️👀

Ness Garza, a talented artist who tells a darn good story, is recounting her experiences working at an amazon warehouse that is desperately trying to prevent its workers from unionizing. This is the kind of work I love to read:

Problem is: Neither our work culture nor our education culture incentivizes deep learning. Instead, we're incentivized to economize--to learn only what's needed to finish the task or get the answer right on the test.

So, people use ChatGPT, even when they know they could learn more by other means.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action

Many a happy afternoon of my early twenties was spent marveling at the daring river surfers in München. I hope the beloved wave returns!

Munich's famous river wave has vanished after a cleanup. Surfers hope it will return soon
Germany’s famous river-surfing wave has disappeared, leaving Bavarian surfers high and dry for the first time in decades.

My little dog, who has convinced himself he is a rabid pit-bull : TRESPASSSSSERS! I'll killlll youuuuu! Kill! Kill!

**scrambles to the gate and barks his loudest and most murderous barks.**

The college kids across the way at whom he is barking: {delightedly}

It's Christmas!

There is good news this week, actually. Katie found a Herman Miller chair at the goodwill for $20. Great condition. Yes, a real one. I feel this is an occasion to break out the #blesstd hashtag.

Also a number of students from the university have shown up to speak with thoughtful eloquence on issues that are really important to them. Seeing that civic engagement (on a school night!) makes me really proud of the populations I work with.

I'm attending a city council meeting. Circle K wants a liquor license for *another* location in town and pro/anti positions are voicing opinions.

Pro: Circle K's lawyer, is allotted 5 min talks for 10.

Anti: Multiple residents from near the location, are allotted 5 min, talk for 5 or less.

"Fat Troops" actually sounds like a grad school party theme. Subverting the "discipline (subjugation) of the body" in uniform aesthetic into a "celebration (liberation) of the body" in a uniform aesthetic.

Drink themes would be a fun challenge.

Mmm. just thinking about this vegan pumpkin spice poptart with maple glaze that my friend once made for me. A once in a generation confection.

A tear comes to my eye.

No poptart will ever be as good.
You ever see something done with such incredible skill that it becomes your new bar for how that thing should be done? Like an article so good it becomes THE writing standard for you?

Those things/ moments/foods/texts sure are inspiring :-)
