There are an estimated 5,000 northern spotted owls left in the Northwest, with less than 2,000 in Oregon. Counting them is a critical step in protecting them from extinction, but the federal hiring freeze has put that process in jeopardy.

800 had to be turned away at the door. Over 190,000 tuned into the livestream.
