Afternoon! I am reading No Such Thing as a Free Lunch, a collection of brilliant short stories by Rosalind Brackenbury. They were originally published as a pamphlet in 1975, now reissued by Walmer Books.

Your Happy Thread of the Day:

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

I am so sorry to read this. I am just endlessly shocked at how people can be like this. I hope you are OK, although that seems a naive thing to write.

It is an amazing thing, isn't it, finding a life in a few objects? A sort of magic. & how very lucky both uncle & niece were that you were the person who bought the bureau. You did a beautiful thing there.

This is a great story! Make sure you read right to the very end.

This could be a long and rambling thread. Be patient with me.

I bought an old mahogany bureau on Ebay. I didn't really want a bureau as we're meant to be downsizing, but it was a beautiful piece & obviously very old. Google lens suggests the brass chased handles are Queen Anne. That's 1702-1714 😯

This is a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it on here. Brought a tear to my eye.

2/2 Landscape at the edge of the Alps, 1532. Another fantastic (rosy sky!) yet somewhat mysterious watercolor by Wolf Huber, whose day is today.

1/4 Antisemitism is not taken seriously enough in progressive spaces or in pro-Palestinian activism spaces - that is simply a statement of fact

Week after week we saw antisemitic elements at pro-Palestine protests, shouting hatred with protesters walking by saying and doing nothing about it

Two Jays in mid-air against a backdrop of golden autumn leaves, one banking sharply with wings fanned wide, the other gliding towards it…dramatically swooping us into October’s first FlyDay.

It’s #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek in Scotland this week and in the rest of the UK next week. As a dyslexic reader myself I wanted to use #KidsBooksFriday this week to celebrate brilliant, accessible and super-readable texts of all kinds.

Book cover for Wonderfully Wired Brains by Louise Gooding showing a young person with short hair and glasses wearing a green hoodie. Around their head are a myriad of different things from animals to basketballs, pencils, paint brushes and games controllers. Book cover for Ink Girls by Marieke Nijkamp and Sylvia Bi showing three girls with papers in their hand as if passing our leaflets, hovering over a medieval European style city. Genius. Even greater than my personal favourite from the 1970s Blue Peter book of prize-winning limericks

there was an old old man
who had a big big pan
and when he had it
he caught a rabbit
and made some rabbit jam

The official graphic for National Poetry Day 2025 on the theme of 'Play'. It's an 8-bit, pastel background of a cherry blossom tree against a blue sky with books being thrown into the air. In large, alternating pink and blue text in the centre of the image, it reads: National Poetry Day / 02.10.2025 / PLAY
