I missed that the South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo passed, at 85, last June. Listen to this song, which always soothes something unsettled deep inside me, recorded in exile in London in 1978. Unreal, non-egoist, beat-dragging, masterful drumming on this track. A musician's musician. RIP.

Design friends! @johnaugust.bsky.social is looking for a "UI-heavy product designer with exceptional visual taste" for a new product. Contract, for now, but his shop builds exceptionally well considered software. If I was looking I'd be all over this.

Oh, I love this GoFundMe aimed at helping @nisishawl.bsky.social fund the writing of a different kind of book: an "artifact of [an] imaginary philosophical movement". This is a book Nisi dreamed and has used in their fiction, so the idea of it jumping the veil into the realized world is thrilling.

Apple Music appears to be showing alt-image text for Pink Floyd albums instead of cover art.
A screenshot of the Apple Music Pink Floyd page. It shows the layout with "Latest release", "Top Songs", "Essential albums", and "Albums", but all of the artwork has been replaced with terse alt text.

For "Essential Albums" it has:

* "A wall of white bricks with red graffiti" for The Wall.
* "Two men in suits shaking hands one man is on fire" for Wish You Were Here.
* "A prism refracts light into the spectrum" for Dark Side of the Moon.
* "Four young men viewed through a Kaleidoscope" for The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".

For "Albums" it has:
* "Four men walk across the ruins of Pompeii" for "Pink Floyd at Pompei
* "A man rows across a sea of clouds" for The Endless River (Deluxe Edition)
* "Two giant metal faces in a field" for The Division Bell
* "Ultralight flys over rows of hospital beds on a beach" for A momentary lapse of reason (2019 remix)
* Rows of hospital beds on a beach" for A Momentary Lapse of Reason

My favorite part of this article is that there was a schism and original Castrator vocalist Mallika Sundaramurthy formed a new band called Emasculator. May this new sub-genera flourish as it splits and divides in infinitum, death metal cell division building a body of bloody brutal feminist metal.

My favorite feminist brutal death metal band just released a killer new album, so I did a quick interview with founding member Carolina Pérez Arango!

Castrator Sharpen Their Knives
The brutal feminist death metallers return with a killer new guitarist, a blood-splattered new album, and plenty of new bones to pick.

My favorite part of the bible is the Parable of the First Person Shooter

Ok, so here's my train of thought:

Holy shit, I had no idea who Devo WAS. I just know the song "Whip It". Never considered its meaning.

Musical innovation!

Whoa, they're MAD political...and I love it!

Mark Mothersbaugh? That's the dude from Rugrats!

Not even DONE with the documentary & already:

We made you a rigorously cited timeline of major moves, cases, changes, and other wildass developments in the immigration system since January 20. This is one of the most complicated things I've ever worked on, but we think it needs to be done. The thread breaks down the kinds of things we found.

We have a new issue page up today, looking at the multi-pronged assault on both immigrants to the United States and the immigration system itself: unbreaking.org/issues/immig...
Immigration — Unbreaking
How the administration is breaking the government, and what that means for all of us.

Red was one of a kind. She was a radical in the best sense, unwavering in her identity. Yes, a lovable grump who, when you got a smile out of her, you know you really earned it.

RIP Red Reddick. Red was a Seattle bookselling legend—a lovable grump who was boundlessly passionate about sharing great literature with good people.
A photo of Red Reddick, with text below:

“February 22, 1952 - May 14, 2025
Bookseller. Dyke. Activist. Writer. Poppa. Collective member. Faithful friend.

Born in Sumner, Washington, Red moved to Seattle in 1970 to sell books with flair at Red and Black Collective, Twice Sold Tales, Mercer Street, and Oblivion. With mobility declining, she leaned on 'Alice Walker,' 'Citizen Cane,' and Cascade neighbours and friends.

Lover of the Beats, San Francisco, social justice, books and music; an American flaneur who roamed the city and came home to write about it. Memorial service Sept 7th, 2:00-4:00 pm, Immanuel Lutheran, 1215 Thomas St.”

Full hour! Full hour!

My pitch for all streaming services, but themed on Murderbot for Apple TV:

A daily soap opera. Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. Do it fast, do it cheap. One hour a day. Tin foil sets. Low, low budget. No VFX except premade/rudimentary. Cut a one-hour condensed version for the weekend.

How did the Murderbot showrunners pitch Sanctuary Moon to the actors? @vfarmstrong.com asked, and Paul and Chris Weitz answered!

The illustration reference must have been this trading card we made. I’m in the blue shirt and illustrator made me front and center. Pat, with the speaker on his head, made it to the repair bench with a sawed off arm in the drawing.
A trading card picture of a bunch of people, the staff, sitting amidst a pile of vintage Fender amps. It says “The Trading Musician”

Here’s an ad from the mid 90s when I worked at The Trading Musician (rip). It ran in @thestranger.com, which was famously known for @dansavage.bsky.social’s column and kink-forward personals.
A newspaper advertisement shows a detailed comic of a dungeon with BDSM themes. The picture shows a man being spanked with a paddle, weird sex robots, a businessman clawing to get out, a man being pegged behind the counter, and a lot of other weirdness.

Hand lettered text reads:

“Get out the whips and handcuffs! It’s The Trading Musician’s Fetish Guitar and Equipment Sale

Acoustic contact mics that can be mounted on anything. (ANYTHING!). Strange-shaped electrics…Fat keyboards from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s & 90’s! Touch the infamous IRON CROSS GUITAR! MEET SINGLE PERSONS WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS! Check out our necks, bodies, tubes, speakers, microphones and cases! Learn new positions in which to hold your guitar!

Don’t just fantasize about better equipment; go out and get it! Try our new twisted stomp boxes & vintage sex machines! Circle-jerk in the drum shop… used sound systems for your special events! Instructional videos and how-to books! Black leather straps with spikes…

One of the best rebrands I've seen in years. Really hits on aesthetics and business case reasons to do something like this.

Humbly, I submit that we update Betteridge's law of headlines. Instead of answering "no" to any headline that ends in a question mark, I think we can safely start responding with "what the actual fuck?"
