This has basically happened because of the Russian (so-called neutral) athletes that have been able to participate in the Olympics, because their presence by default undermines the idea that the Olympics can be non-political. You can't then tell Ukrainians or others not to be political.

He's made an entirely rational use of his platform. Russia's constant killing of Ukrainian athletes, and Ukrainian civilians in general, was not being talked about, and now it is. And that's more important than sport.
