Lovely piece on #kidlit and reading today
As is fairly obvious, I love reading, and I'm happy that my son does too. But I don't always love the way we talk about child literacy, nor where the UK media tends to place the blame for those rates' recent, and worrying, fall.

Unsurprisingly, the only sane advice in this pile of crap article comes from a Librarian

Hamlet: and I, Hamlet, vow to honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and ...
Ghost: wait ... did you say Hamlet?
Hamlet: yes?
Ghost: not Scrooge?
Hamlet: ... no?
Ghost (scrolling increasingly desperately through Google calendar) oh shiii..

Love Adam Sharp! Stock up on some exotic insults before the family come round for Xmas
The most brutal way of telling someone they’re a few sandwiches short of a picnic that I’ve heard in French is t’es pas la truite la plus oxygénée de la rivière. It means “you’re not the most oxygenated trout in the river.”

* read on for similar insults from around the world (a thread)…

This is why banning books must be fiercely contested at all times - it's only ever the start of something
Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."

A librarian who was given the directive has come forward asking for whistleblower protections.
Tennessee whistleblower says library board chair sought private data as part of state's book purge
A First Amendment expert told The Advocate that there are "huge" legal implications stemming from the situation.

Have been in a slight reading slump of late and this just blew me right out of it! Absolutely brilliant YA folk horror by @darrensimpson44.bsky.social. A creepy, dark tale about folklore, nature and what people will do to survive. A must-read!

Library lesson with Yr7 on immigration to support curriculum text (Refugee Boy). We introduced them to Front Desk by @kellyyang.bsky.social and it was the most sublime lesson! Read Ch1 to them, discussed it and they loved it so much! Reservations out the door 🥰 So nice when lessons really land!

They'll literally do anything other than put libraries AND LIBRARIANS in schools
If you want kids to read:

-Reopen the closed libraries
-Give them free books
-Sponsor author visits in schools with high % pupil premium or FSM students
-Work on adult literacy

Then Y8s will have a chance of passing this test

Just finished this absolute delight! I find SF tough to read but this was just wonderful. I'm really looking forward to the film version now (although they better not mess up Rocky...)

If you want to push back against tech's encroachment into every corner of our lives, you have to read books. They're eager to create a future in which most people are illiterate and hooked on slop, a world without imagination or knowledge. Reading is resistance.

Also great! "That's why I think we should fund libraries more. It's not just because they're a great resource, it's because I don't wanna know what librarians will do if we don't give them a place to go."

Absolutely brilliant conclusion to this trilogy. Adeyemi really expands the world and has created some great new villains. This series is such a fresh take on YA fantasy!
