The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

I think we need a full accounting of which of the tech executives think Roko’s Basilisk is real I really think we deserve full transparency on which of them genuinely think they’re building a computer god who will punish them if it’s not built.

it's fucked up for breweries to add lactose to beers without being really clear about it on the packaging. very bad surprise. not delicious enough to be worth it either!!

every damn year people need to be loud and wrong about this song. the reliability is comforting i guess
I put it to you that Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is not merely the worst Christmas song but is also in fact the worst song in the history of recorded sound.

I’ve forgotten this sometimes but being able to discover something you like, curate it, and make time to enjoy it *is* intelligence, connecting with art is intelligence, empathy is intelligence, the way of the dullard is to find nothing meaningful in art except for a way to seem snidely clever

As a recovering nonprofit fundraiser, I must once again urge you that whatever good intent of Giving Tuesday's founding, it has now metastisized into a day where nonprofits have to sink valuable staff time into mass appeals with ever-diminishing returns, competing directly with their peers

One of my fundamental beliefs is that I should not have to talk to people who have been cruel to me. You might be surprised to learn how often -- and vociferously -- people disagree with me about that.

Desperately clung-to hypothesis: Carney is acting purely in the interest of average Canadians and is a 4D chess playing genius.

Alternative hypothesis: Carney is a banker and just here to enrich extractive, tech, and defense industries.

Which is consistent with basically all observation to date? 🤔

Today, the PCs bragged about “record” post-secondary funding during Question Period at Queen's Park.

Reality check: Ontario ranks dead last in Canada!

No spin can hide it. Ontario STILL needs to reinvest in colleges and universities: bit.ly/4pmNhal

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

We bought into the "post scarcity" narrative because digital tech feels so magic and ethereal but we need to get back to an understanding of the material costs and effects of those systems. They are not very post-scarce in reality.

All too often a ticket into various elite spheres is a willingness to keep yr mouth shut & use power only for yrself & cronies. "Elites" my ass. I've seen people with no money throw their lives, careers, bodies in the path of danger too many times to have any respect for cowardly behavior at the top

cishet men should be as embarrassed by the inability to have a conversation or professional/platonic relationship with the rest of humanity as if they never learned to use a toilet or tie their shoes but unfortunately there's a whole economy & narrative ecosystem telling them it's natural & a virtue

I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”

It should now be a wake-up call to Canadian progressives — proving that people-first politics rooted in fairness, affordability, and real unity is the way forward.

my controversial yet brave take is that perhaps the culture should Try Another Sandwich that isn't an iteration on a burger. I wish there were more attempts at creative, satisfying hot sandwiches that weren't just borgor 4ever, tysm for attending my seminar.
i've seen more and more people dissatisfied with the omnipresence of the smash burger and yet i see none offering an alternative that's not a regression to the overly plump steakhouse burgers that necessitated its smashing. just a lot of grousing with no new ideas. very curious!
