ADHD is more than just a label.
But even a label can be important. Especially if all your old ones were “lazy”, “stupid”, “too much”, “naughty” or “no good.”

Many ADHD referrals still don’t use the NHS electronic referral system (eRS).

The system exists but isn’t required. That means missing data, lost referrals, and no clear picture of demand across regions.

📅 Part of ADHD Awareness Month. Day 8 of 31

NHS England just published new guidance on ADHD service delivery: calling for reviews of waiting lists and better risk management.

Good to see formal recognition that untriaged, date order waiting lists are unsafe and inequitable. But it still lacks national ownership, accountability and standards.

Thanks! It’s what prompted me to post this:

The timing of this with an overdue report from the ADHD Taskforce… Part 1 in June had solid recommendations.

Publish Part 2, commit to ownership, delivery and a national strategy. Not bury it under another review.

Looks like we’ve got our work cut out at @adhdpathfinding.org.uk

Hard facts are right here and need to feed into a more accurate narrative. Only 1 in 9 of those who have ADHD are diagnosed, or 0.32% from 9 million GP records. Other studies show rising demand is linked to greater awareness.

Not that it’s any consolation, but even moving areas within England results in the same cut off and reset. Why I’m doing what I’m doing.

We’re all going to get there with this.

I know. It’s really hard and you can’t just switch off the worry. He is going to be okay and I hope diagnosis has at least brought some certainty.

Timely reflections on the politics behind the delayed ADHD Taskforce report and what’s really at stake.

We’ve already set out what Part 2 must contain and how we’ll judge it when it lands.

ADHD referrals are rarely triaged by severity. Everyone just goes into one long queue.

A person in crisis waits the same as someone stable. It’s unsafe and unfair, and it makes early help impossible.

There is a joined up strategy here.
Invest properly in needs-based support to reduce social harm, improve cohesion and strengthen the economy.

This is a Beveridge Report level opportunity on mental health. The research exists. What’s missing is political courage.

The political under-acknowledgment of ADHD and similar conditions stems from fear: that recognising it means more sick notes and benefits.

But the cost of neglect is higher: homelessness, addiction, prisons, exclusion. “Economically inactive.” The system pays later for what it ignores now.

had a good rant about the absolute shambles I've had to go through over the past two years, anyone dealing with ADHD provision should do likewise

ADHD care in the UK is a postcode lottery.

Different rules. Long waits. Services that don’t talk to each other.

We’re mapping all this, starting with lived experience.

If you’ve been through ADHD assessment, diagnosis or treatment, your story matters.

No personal info, just what happened.

The entire medical concept of both is pretty shaky.

I talked with one know the people involved with DSM5… he essentially confirmed ADHD / Autism are separate due to politics and history.

Not because splitting it that way represents a biological reality.

It’s a mess & services end up a mess too.

ADHD and autism often overlap but services treat them as totally separate.

Two referrals. Two assessments. Two costs. Two waiting lists.

It’s inefficient and unfair. A combined pathway would reflect reality, cut duplication, and speed up support.

ADHD is lifelong, but CAMHS and adult neurodiversity services are run separately.

Families can’t be assessed together, and transitions between child and adult care often break down.

Disjointed care, stressful handoffs and missed support opportunities.

Last year it felt odd. Not used to celebrating my birthday. Or me. This year (left) not a a problem at all. There is absolutely no reason not to celebrate. Every moment of every day. Celebrate everything.
