The first “removal” (if this stands) of a Federal Reserve Board Governor in the institution’s 112 year history. Totally unprecedented. No due process. A totally authoritarian move.

Losing a job is intensely stressful, and often has consequences for behavior and mental health. But some of its psychological effects may run counter to expectations.

Job Loss Can Lead to Risky Decision-Making
Rather than being more financially cautious after a layoff, many become less so.

We find men more likely to ask, no difference in outcomes conditional on asking -> better returns for men (in Norway)

And it's a bit odd since I think a Jewish Avrohom is more likely to vote for a Republican than a Jewish Abraham.

What conclusion do you draw from the "blue" names? Says to me that there are not many Orthodox Jews in America and they only live in a few places, but not much about polarization.
hirshmansam.bsky.social
Yeah, I guess I was thinking of it as if 1 is yes, trouble; if 1 is no, that's what I expect; if 1 is the complicated option, then it should be explained elsewhere (though should does not always mean is)

Don't know why it is a word doc and that is weird, but I would bet is based on aspredicted form where Q1 is plausibly not very informative and Q2 is hypotheses

"Decisions under risk may be driven by similar psychological mechanisms to decisions under complexity" is definitely a worse title

After being alerted about possible misconduct, the I4R are reproducing published papers that use data from a specific NGO (GDRI). This thread releases the first 2 reports and provides more information about the work and responses/statements from authors journals and journals. 🧵

Comes in handy to have a record. I don't go back and update it unless I visit a place again, so there may be some defunct shops. Hope it's helpful!

It could extend to those kinds of risks since we think it's related to risk seeking in losses, but most of what we study are things like gambling and lottery tickets which tend to be more negative. I'd also be looking for more work on why we saw so many new businesses during the pandemic.

New paper: We combine evidence from a survey (correlational), bank spending data, and online experiments to show that job loss increases risk taking.

Joint work with @abbysussman.bsky.social, Carlos Vazquez-Hernandez, Daniel O'Leary, and Jennifer Trueblood

Job loss increases financial risk-taking. People who lost their jobs during the pandemic were more likely to gamble and purchase more lottery tickets, on average, than people who had not lost their jobs. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Results from a cross-sectional survey showing the self-reported number of lottery tickets purchased.

We have new paper showing how changing the risk for regrade decisions affects the gender gap in asking using data from Norway that can identify differences in asking specifically.
hirshmansam.bsky.social
How did changing the riskiness of a choice impact the gender gap in willingness to ask? My new paper in MS with Alex Willén finds gender gaps widen, which benefits men more. The gap is likely driven by gender differences in beliefs.
