This picture was taken on this day (14th November) 1960. For me, it is one of the most powerful and moving of all the photographs from the US Civil Rights movement

Just a message to say that i really enjoyed John&Paul.
If I'm frank, I wasn't sure that there was much more I could learn about them but I was wrong.
Your writing has made me hear a lot of those songs in a new way
It was a very moving book and I will miss reading it

On a bit of an 80s vibe at the moment. This history of Reagan does not have enough detail of his economic policies; only gives a chapter to AIDS and doesn't mention his criminal justice policies at all but is very good on his life story and foreign policy

Tomorrow marks 32 years since one of my favourite letters was published:
March 28, 2025 at 10:37 PM
Richard II; Othello; Great Expectations; Bleak House; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; The Wasteland; The Dubliners.
Loved both Shakespeare's; loved The Dubliners; Loved OFOTCN.
Couldn't stand the rest. Makes me a philistine, don't care.
US and UK friends, I'm curious: What books were part of your required reading for highschool literature class? Which of them do you remember loving, and which did you loathe?

I am a complete beginner at gardening but with a large garden. Mainly lawn and borders. Any tips for a good book to start me off?

Could a Scotsman have fought both against the Crown at Newburn and against the new regime at Dunbar ten years later?

If news of Jimmy Carter's death has sparked an interest in him or the period then I really recommend anything by @rickperlstein.bsky.social but especially Reaganland which is tremendous

One of the great annual pleasures of social media has arrived on Bluesky.

Looking forward to this:
It has been quite the year, so as a distraction from all that here are my WTF TV news moments from 2024 ✨

Really enjoyed Republic by Alice Hunt.
There seems to have been a lot of interest in this period recently - The Blazing World; Devil Land; The Restless Republic; the new Ronald Hutton.
This is right up there with the best of them: accessible but informative; really engaging. Recommended.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of Edward Everett working for months; going to an event where he had top billing; speaking for 2 hours...

...and being completely overshadowed by what came after him.

What are the right Bluesky accounts to follow for breaking news - especially politics.

Twitter is great at it; Bluesky is not

Anyone got any ideas?
Labour MP @tobyperkinsmp.bsky.social says X is "increasingly useless"

But he admits that it's a "hard habit to break", especially when it continues to be a breaking news source

Other MPs are worried about losing reach

Hey @lettersofnote.bsky.social I think moving from "X" to Bluesky justifies publishing THAT letter again.

You know the one.

The one from Sir Archibald Clark Kerr that begins "My Dear Reggie...."

Sometimes people are slow to admit that they haven't read the great and famous novels.
So I will be brave and admit that until about 5 years ago, I had never read Slaughterhouse Five.

I write this message just on the off chance that someone sees it and hasn't read the book. READ IT. 1/2

Good morning @victoriancommons.bsky.social

A question for you:
The Offences Against The Person Act (1861) set the same max penalty (5 years) for ABH (Section 47) and the ostensibly more serious offence of Wounding/GBH (Section 20).

I have heard that this was the result of an error.
Is this true?

The excellent @danielhewittitv.bsky.social is now on Blue-sky.

Really good on housing and modern political issues. Very worth a follow!
My first Bluesky post - start as I mean to go on.

I have a new podcast series out on November 18th about Britain’s housing crisis and much more - how we got into this mess and the human impact.

It will be called ‘The Trapped’ and will be available on all podcast platforms. Would love you to listen

This is a photograph of my great uncle, Jim Ida, in 1942. The photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange as part of her documentation of the Japanese American incarceration. He is sitting with his family’s bags, waiting to be taken to an internment camp. (Tanforan, I believe.) He was 17.

Today is 11th November. Most people will associate that with Armistice Day*. One of the great tragedies of WW1 was that when peace was agreed between nations, it did not end the loss of life

I know I bang on about Robert Caro but I'm almost evangelical about him. Everyone should read his history of LBJ and there should be a national holiday when Part 5 comes out.
If you have never read it and you have a Spotify account then Part 3 can be consumed on its own and is available for free

This whole book is tremendous. Highly, highly recommended.
Helen Castor isn't on here so I can't @ her so just shouting praise into the ether.
Really enjoying this and it contains one of the most exciting accounts of Richard II's role in the Peasants' Revolt that I have ever read
