just regular old compulsive perfectionism? tendency towards people pleasing? 😇 tbh it's less the fear of missing something, more the feeling of overwhelm the number brings. but the good news is one can learn to manage this!

Using sense of place to communicate actionable environmental and climate justice in interdisciplinary classrooms - Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences
As global environmental changes disproportionately impact disadvantaged communities, critical research documents subsequent environmental and climate injustices. Communicating these injustices in higher education university classrooms grows increasingly urgent as students are eager to engage with justice issues in professional and personal settings. We identify major challenges for teaching environmental and climate justice within interdisciplinary fields and propose a pedagogical framework based on relational scales of “sense of place” to communicate meaningful and culturally relevant environmental justice topics in university classrooms with multiple dimensions of student diversity. In response to a lack of accessible and tangible pedagogical environmental justice tools across all environmental fields, we highlight practical classroom applications situated at the intersection of individual, community, and place scales. Doing so shows that engaging pedagogical exercises in the sense of place scales can communicate an environmental and climate justice that is not just another academic term, but also an actionable opportunity for students within and beyond classrooms.

Sand batteries are literally just silos of sand that retain heat exceptionally well -- so well that they can be tied to heat exchange systems to serve as proxy *electrical* batteries. Finland's new model can store enough power (100 MWh) to heat an entire town for a week.

Finland has inaugurated an industrial-scale sand battery this week in the southern town of Pornainen, where it'll take over heating duties from an old woodchip power plant for the municipality. It's s...

Hate to see this but glad it's getting coverage. I'm always so impressed with and inspired by the work that comes out of your lab, Timmons.

My lab's been attacked by an anti-wind group and their lawyers. They threatened the science funding of my whole university, to shut me and my undergraduate research assistants up.

NYT just covered it. 1/n

I think it will have to. But it helps to know that lots of great people have messy inboxes too

I know deep down that you're right. If it's really important, they'll just send more emails???

Busy people: how do you keep up with your inbox? I auto sort listservs, use folders, set timers, but still spend so much time on email. If I'm behind, it's hard to focus on writing and doing. If I keep up, my day is gone.

Help me escape from the dismal void that is my Outlook and find peace

Say it louder: there is no absolute scarcity, only distribution politics

Here's an extreme example of the reality that there is no absolute scarcity, only distribution politics. In Gaza created as a tool of genocidal war. But the same is true of almost all human needs, including housing here in the USA.

A very dear friend started a substack to reflect on what it's like to write a dissertation in America right now as a mother & immigrant. I recommend it to anyone struggling to write - she will make you think, laugh, and feel less alone

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.
