Hi, Bluesky! 🇨🇦 urban & landscape ecologist here - tweeting at the intersection of ecology and urbanism + mentorship and work-life balance. Based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal

Loved spending the summer with the @jananisivarajah.bsky.social lab and @ffgg-ulaval.bsky.social. Lots of new projects on the horizon, and great to learn from another lab group.

Next up, a quick visit to U-Windsor!

Back from a wonderful week-long workshop abroad, where I decided to keep my phone on airplane mode (somewhere with plenty of WiFi around when you really need it). There’s something very refreshing about not being tethered to your phone 24-7.

Now immediately back to casually doomscrolling, of course

I know I’m not alone in having been profoundly shaped by Jane’s work and stories as a young scientist. It’s incredible the impression one woman can make on so many. I’m so glad that she lived such a long and rich life.

Jane Goodall spoke in my hometown when I was young, and my high school science teacher found me a ticket. I fell in love with her mix of enthusiasm and compassion. As a grad student, I wrote for the Jane Goodall Institute’s blog, which fed my interest in writing and science communication…

And then she became such a great voice for biodiversity, climate protection, and species protection (and told such fierce stories about facing down the men who belittled her). May her memory be a blessing and a guide.

Jane Goodall's work insisting, with evidence from her brilliant and tenacious fieldwork, that we were not so separate from animals, and they were much more like us than the Eurocentric theorists asserted, was so important.

Winter cycling is so freeing! Most of the time the bike paths are clear and the roads aren’t so bad - but even in rougher conditions like these I’m able to navigate the city faster and with more flexibility than with transit. Plus no shoveling out parking 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's interesting that anyone would be surprised by this. They are large language models, not large fact models. They are very good at language; it's unsurprising that they aren't terribly good at facts.

Want to avoid climate catastrophe?
Normalize getting around by walking & biking in cities.

Wil je een klimaatramp voorkomen?
Maak het normaal om je in steden te voet of op de fiets te verplaatsen.

I want to make a personal request to those of you who use a bike for transportation purposes to start taking more photos and posting them.

You can do so much by showing even the most mundane errands with a bike to educate and inspire others. They're often more effective than words. 📸

I love this compilation, *and* I’m reminded of the failure of the information deficit model of science communication.

Throwing more facts at anti-cyclists likely won’t change their minds… so how do we? What are the stories we need to tell to create better cities?
