Whenever we’re preparing for media training with a client, we’re always looking for good examples of what NOT to do in an interview.

California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter just gave us a perfect one.

There’s too much to unpack in one post — but here are three basic principles she violated 👇

1️⃣ Your Audience Is Not the Reporter

With the camera rolling, Porter argues with the reporter about the question. “How would I need them [Trump voters] in order to win, ma’am?” She should have simply said she will work to earn every vote and touted her track record of winning Republican votes when she was elected to Congress, which she eventually did. Instead, she did nothing to increase her appeal to voters—which is her main audience.

2️⃣ Don’t Tell Reporters How to Do Their Job

Any serious reporter bristles at the notion of their interview subject telling them how to conduct an interview. Yet a visibly annoyed Porter does just that. “Ask the question as you have it written and I’ll answer it.”

Then, she looks at her staffer and says, “I don’t want to keep doing this,” and begins to take her mic off and get up before saying she won’t do an interview “with seven follow-ups to every question.”

She even added: “I want to have a pleasant, positive conversation.”

That’s not how interviews work—and Porter’s been a public official long enough to know better.

3️⃣ Always Have a Game Plan

Every interview is an opportunity to make news that helps you achieve your goal—in this case with Porter, to make a good impression with California voters. She’s getting plenty of attention for this interview, but not for the reasons she wanted. Her core message is completely overshadowed.

This is one of the more detrimental interviews in recent memory for a candidate.

Politics is, at the end of the day, a popularity contest — and here, Porter comes across as defensive and unlikeable, undermining her own message.

As someone that started reading european news BECAUSE of that line, the European center-left parties are pretty much Democrats. Yes there are parties more left in Europe but those parties are pretty small and need to work with the center-left parties for power.
